It's a bit hard to explain but I have several dogs and we a clearly defined pack structure. I greatly prefer this to almost any other social group I have been a part of. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Yep. While I wouldn't have called it a "pack" until you described it, yes, I do prefer my "family of friends" to constantly meeting and negiotiating with potential friends. So, yeah. I do like it. Unfortunately, it used to be a lot larger than it is now. I am very choosy when it comes to adding new friends.

So if you're referring to dogs, literally-I go out every day hiking and doing trail maintenance with my dog and we're definitely a team. I'd have at least one more dog if circumstances allowed. We truly work together and that's always been my relationship with dogs.

If you're referring to people in dog pack-like groupings, really it's the same thing-in activities of shared interest, I love being with familiar, like-minded people, doing a project or activity together, but also like working alone much of the time. In my mind, when I'm working alone, the "pack" is still with me mentally-we share the project and will consult and empathize with the work accomplished, alone and together. Yes, that's VERY important to me. When people talk about loneliness, that's what loneliness would be to me-no one to share the projects and adventures with. Often these relationships are not at all social friendships, but that's just fine.

For the record I was referring to a literal dog pack. I can't spend more than 24 hours away from my pack. When I do, i just feel lost.

I guess that I should have taken your statement more literally. :D

I hate dogs.

I don't mind human 'packs' though.
