I was in military. I came to like the well defined order and predictability. Coincidentally, when considering other jobs, things like warehouses usually came to mind first.

One of my first jobs was as an "order picker" for an insurance company. I was 18 going on 19.

...I've never , reaaly , worked . Ever .
I'm not proud of this , it's just how it's worked out .
The fact thhat I never relly " completed school " , and found myself on the correct track , proably had loads to do with this , as did various situations I was in over the years which DID NOT lead to jobs , even in a " forced " sense .
Perhaps if I went back to school , in the right social position , I could " reach for employment " from there  .

I work as a data entry operator.

I've been working this same job for 34 years, and was a data entry operator for about six months before that with another company.

I've worked:

In a medical library as a "laborer"--stacking books, typing up cards for the card catalogue (this was way before computers entered libraries).

As an "order picker."

Loading trucks.

As a clerk-typist (sort of an anachronistic job nowadays).

Various temporary jobs of a clerical nature.

As a Census enumerator (for the 1980 and 2010 Censuses)

I was "in the office" for the 2000 Census.

I was in college to work in the video game industry but dropped out due to immense stress.

I'm in worse stress now and can't work, and it's been 5 years since that.

I washed dishes. Didn't mind it really. Then I cooked. That was hectic. Hated it. Went to tech college for a year. Automotive machinist. Loved it. The market fell out. At the time the only need for engine remanufacturing was older cars, some motorcycles like harley davidson engines, and mostly collector, and race cars. It was pritty much seasonal work, and must have gotten laid off at least 7 times in 5 different places. Always worked on cars since high school. Back yarded, pritty much self taught. Got a mechanic job for a few years. Hectic. Quit. Went to work as an industrial machine maintenance machinist. I was really good at that. Hectic. Hurt myself. Work comp threw me for a loop. Very bad gaming ordeal, I couldn't handle. Quit. Decided to be a courier. Definately no good at that. Crashed my truck. Went back to cooking as a fry cook because I could handle it with my injury. Hated it. All the time working on cars and motorcycles in my spare time to make extra money, and go fast. Got better somewhat. (Just a bad case of golfers, and tennis elbow from wrenching). Moved to CO, because an old friend from high school told me he could get me a job I might like. There wasn't one. Worked for a moving company for about 4 months. Didn't like that one. Some reasons I don't care to explain. Moved back to my hometown. Took some ASE tests to get a job as a mechanic, and have been doing it ever since. My advice to you. DON'T DO IT! I don't work for anyone now, and it is the best thing ever so far. It took about 20 years for me to build up the tools, and no how to be as confident, and as professional as I am. college in this field does almost nothing for you. Working for people in this industry for me was hell on earth. I was good at it, and I never gave up on a job.

It is amazing what people do out of need. If you have support, be thankful.

My first "job" probably doesn't really count, after (elementary) school at the hardware store and grain elevator for my dad. If I was there, he'd put me to work dusting shelves, sweeping, typing, or posting (and I'd take customers' money, so I guess you could say "store clerk"--he'd keep track of the hours I worked and pay for me for them. Second one was being "Assistant Librarian" during my Study Hall one year at the High School -- I got a monthly paycheck for that, withholding and everything. Then during, after and between college, I was a carhop, waitress, and for two years when I was not in school, a quality control lab technician at a feed plant. Then a more regular job at the Farmers' Union aforementioned, formally called bookkeeping, which I did do. Then more restaurant jobs including cook and dishwasher, as well as waiting on customers, telemarketing, throwing newspapers from a car in the wee hours, church secretary, looking after plants in a greenhouse, maybe a few more things I've forgotten. As I mentioned in another thread, I never kept a job more than two years, some only a few days. (Getting a restaurant job is easy to do, or was then: huge turnover in employees.) But I did have a job most of the time, except when my daughter was very small, and then I managed to do some things for money, like typing at home.

Factory work; very repetitive, not stressful, I enjoyed it.

Fast food; high pressure, lots of stress, a nightmare.

Orderly; enjoyed working with the old folks but nursing staff caused too much confusion and stress.

Janitorial work; my favorite. Almost no stress, pretty much work alone.
