Is it really common for aspires to never get over people whom they went out with?

I went out with a girl for a few weeks about a year ago, and am still not over her. I still contact her from time to time (were "just friends" now). Is this really normal?

Also, if you are able to get over things such as this, how do you go about doing it?

Yes, it's possible. I cannot remember the faces of most of the women I've dated, and a lot of their names have slipped my mind as well.

I do remember my ex-wife very well, however. The horns, the scales, the broomstick, the barking and growling, the violence, and the way she filled out a straight-jacket are all vividly seared into my memory; and her name shall forever be "Psychodemonbitchqueen".

I think if you're having trouble getting over an ex, staying in touch is likely to hold you back.

This is almost exactly what I was going to say. The best way to get over someone is to get away from them and have absolutely no contact whatsoever. It's great that you can be friends, but if you truly are not able to move past her and consider a relationship with someone else, than the best thing you can do is lose her number.

We do tend to become obsessed with people. That is the issue, it's OUR mind doing it, NOT the other person. If
you can see that, you can free yourself up to move onward. We are projecting onto that person, giving them
a power and seductive appeal that, in essence, is all in our minds. Once I saw this, I could "forget" and let go
of past lovers (and past enemies). Best to you, Alice
