BBC News has an interesting article about a woman who says that she finds social situations difficult because she is a bit deaf.

BBC News Story

I don’t think this is simply deafness, she has a specific problem that reduces her ability to distinguishing certain sounds in spoken language; her ability to decode language is affected. She had meningitis as a child.

What do others think of this case?

i heard that social situations became difficult as beethoven began to lose his hearing. he became annoyed when he would need people to repeat things for him.

I think it does create a sort of hiccup in conversational flow, but I wish my friend wasn't so determined to hide it. She's desperate for nobody to find out she's got a hearing problem. I don't know why. I don't mean to make light of it - I've got my own problems too. But if she could say, "I didn't get that," nobody would mind repeating things.
