One of the instuctors from my sons activity was mentioning today that her life partner and leader of the company has Aspergers, the conversation was based around having Aspergers doesn't stop you from achieving what you want out of life, it just means you have more to learn. I know her partner (well I have passed greetings with her and watched her in instruct classes for a year). although she is reserved she passes very much NT with her facial expressions, social skills, eye contact etc. although I realise all this was learnt.
The same instructor lent me a book earlier this year "Nobody nowhere by Donna Williams" and commented how far Donna had come from being non verbal and how much she has achieved.
The instructor is a wonderful person whom I admire greatly and one of the few people I enjoy talking with, she knows of my diagnosis and has offered me advice on occasions when I have asked.
After our last interaction today I feel somewhat inadequate.....Aspergers has stopped me from achieving, it has impacted my learning, I have social anxiety so I don't find myself in a lot of situations that I could learn from. Lots of things leave me overwhelmed, I have sensory processing difficulties, feel more comfortable on my own, need time to recover even from my own children, suffer shutdowns and meltdowns and just the effort of looking at someone leaves me exhausted.
Am I the only one..are others like me?
