My son happens to be named Max, he's 7.5 yrs old, and has Aspergers. My friends keep telling me that I should watch Parenthood. That it's "So Good!" My question is this-is Max, on the show, and accurate representation of how an Aspergers child is? Or might it just annoy me because it's not realistic at all.

Thanks.

My question for you is what is your opinion on the character?

This character has had mixed reviews and criticisms by autistic people in general. Some say he is just a spoiled brat and he is just having tantrums than meltdowns and he just has bad parents, some say this is just NT's perspective on aspie kids. I think he just has anxiety so he reacts the way he does because he is like me. I am not saying he isn't AS, I just notice he has anxiety along with his AS.

I've only watched the first 4 episodes of season one, so far. So I'm not entirely sure, just yet, of my opinion. He seems to have no emotions, which I find strange. My son has huge emotions. Either he's really excited, really scared, really nervous, etc. He does suffer from pretty extreme anxiety. My son is also extremely verbal. One of the episodes that I saw his parents bribed him with tv so he would eat something that wasn't "one of his foods." My husband and i just laughed because if we offer 500 dollars to our Max to eat something that isn't one of his foods, he still won't eat it. He's terrified of food! So I thought that was kind of lame. Like extremely unrealistic. I'll still give the show a chance, some of the other story lines seem fascinating as well.

I've never watched that show, so I don't really have any answers. I guess I've been hesitant because I can't deal with any reminders of my childhood.

Max is a good character. Good enough for entertainment purposes. I've always gone to a school for autism and some kids are like Max and others aren't

Some don't talk and others talk nonstop. Some keep to themselves and others invade personal space. Some look unhappy all the time and others are always smiling.

We all have our different personalities and autism effects us in different ways.

True. I guess you are right. I find it fascinating how so many people can have the same diagnosis, yet the characteristics vary so much from one to the next.

There are a lot of differences but also a sameness. All of us in my school are in the same boat. We can relate to each other.

I remember in the early episodes they tried to make Max out to be a genius, answer question after question from Jeopardy and other things.
I disliked that since accompanied with Rainman give a false image.
