How to get an autism diagnosis expunged from medical record?
I was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder when I was 10, in 2005, under the DSM IV. I understand that the older diagnostic criteria was looser than the current version with regard to autism diagnoses. My family has been thinking that this diagnosis was wrong, and my behavior was primarily due to my mother not disciplining me before she passed away in 2004. Autism spectrum disorders is a preexisting condition, and I'm also interested in joining the military, so how do I get this diagnosis expunged? It seems to have been done in error under inferior criteria as my family and friends have doubts about the validity of the diagnosis.
Get a second test done. A professional opinion from 12 years ago is still probably more valuable than what some family member says. "It's just bad parenting", "You're just faking it", "You just haven't learn't to be normal" etc seems to be something alot of Autistics have to deal with from family and friends.

I suppose that's a fair point, although the second test is probably a good idea since there's been this drastic change in the diagnostic criteria since 2005. I'm just concerned about the stuff to do with health insurance, and being rejected for the military due to this diagnosis. However, my other family members are right that my mother did neglect me and let me play video games and eat junk food all the time and she did my homework for me, never disciplined me, etc. I'm just not even sure if I'm actually autistic or not.
A common misconception seems to be that if you're Autistic, you either wear diapers and spend your day rolling around screaming and talking backwards, or you're Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. By the time alot of Austics grow to adulthood they have a good sense of how to fit in. My mom was fairly lax too, and I don't know if I have ASD, but I do know I don't flick my hands when I'm excited or feel like I've just been shocked when I'm angry because my mom let me play video games.
Also I don't think ASD blacklists you the military. I'm going for the Air Force and from what I hear Autistics are welcome.

I seem to recall , in America (which I assume the OP...) , I've read that the Army has AS-ness is a no- no for getting in , but not an automatic put-out if it's discovered after you get it , which seems odd...I don't know about the other 5 services and their reserves .

The change has had more to do with labeling then a radical change or tightening of the criteria. For example the old "Aspergers Disorder" is often now "Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1 Severity without accompanying intellectual and language impairment". If the new criteria were really that much stricter, new autism diagnosis would be plummeting but there is no indication this has been happening.
As PaperMajora said autistics bieng told they are not autistic is pretty common. And as he said and you agree a second test is warrented to either. 1. Correct a misdiagnosis if that is what occurred 2. If the original diagnosis was correct help end your Autism denial.

Personally, i'd trust the diagnosis more than the opinion of your family, especially since the "not being raised well" (refrigerator mom) idea of autism has been debunked for a long time.
In addition to that; being autistic shouldn't prohibit you from joining the military (assuming you are in the US, there is the ADA which will protect you, most other countries have a similar law).
If you really want the diagnosis removed, just going to your physician and telling him should be enough, your medical record is your own, no part of what is in it can be shared to a 3rd party without your express permission, and any part of it will be removed on your request. (i do advice against removing the diagnosis, as you will also lose access to any and all accommodation you might qualify for)
my favorite is "try harder"
How are you now today? Are you still struggling in life like with social skills or daily living or executive functioning, etc.? If not, then go for a second testing to get the diagnoses removed. If you are still having troubles in life, then I am very sorry what you are going through with your family and friends. I am sensing gaslighting rather it's intentional or not. People will sometimes blame autism on poor parenting or find excuses for the behavior. I don't know your mother like if she did her best with you or if she just didn't know how to parent or if you really had trouble and she seeked help for it but this seems very common among high functioning folks on the spectrum.
