...hold their child during a meltdown and wish they could do more than just help their child ride it out
...try to find ways to sneak proper nutrients into their child's narrow diet
...listen as patiently as possible to speeches about TV shows, the life cycle of grasshoppers, train mechanics, etc.
...ask permission to hug their child
...cry with pride when their child gets a C in a class they struggle with
...fight the school tooth and nail to make sure their child's IEP is being followed
...pay for private/charter schools so their child can learn in the best environment possible
...homeschool their child for the same reason
...endure judgmental glares when their child doesn't live up to other parents' standards
...go over social scripts with their child before every school year
...are scared to death when their child goes to college
...sometimes screw up and worry that they're not good parents
...know that their child loves them even if they show it in a different way

Your child notices everything you do, and while you may drive each other crazy, they do appreciate all that you do for them. Happy Mother's Day!

This is great! I have never been a mother, but I had one who never gave up on me.

That's a great list of advice for any mother.

I am very thankful for my mom for many reasons.

First, she raised me in a small Christian church, school, and community for 18 years. This was probably the best environment of the options that were available to us then.

Second, and more relevant to autism, she patiently let me practice my poor communicational and social skills without criticizing me. I would start talking abruptly, monologue at her, not take turns, not respond to her, and stop talking abruptly too.

If she had tried to correct me, I probably would have become overwhelmed and discouraged, stopped trying, and my skills would have become weaker and more inadequate from the disuse. I also would have no opportunity to communicate my thoughts or feel connected to anyone.
