I've been working every day lately as manager of a cold stone creamery and i honestly dont know how i got the job but its sooo hard to focus....My question is 1. what do you find helps you to focus when you need to in classes or work or whatnot and 2. How again is aspergers a gift. I'm not trying to insult anyone with that sentence because I do believe it is a gift and makes me unique but im just been really stressed lately and would like a reminder of how it is a gift

Aspergers is just a way of being like any other. I don't think we are special or gifted just different and AS and NT are equally valid.
I am having trouble focusing at work too, I compensate for working really long hours evenings and weekends so I get done what I would get done if I actually worked 40h week.

well im assuming since yer in a manager position you get to boss people around. i would just walk around and look bussy do you have an office? if you do i'd go in there and chill. several bands help me focus but for all the wrong reasons. i start pretending im "in the band" when i listen to my cd player lol

Music helps, but that may be hard to manage in a restaurant environment.

I've found that I stay a lot more focused when I make a written list of all the stuff I need to do. It helps to impose some structure on the day. Plus, it gives me a nice little jolt of accomplishment to cross things off as I complete them.

(#5 on my list today: start going through the threads at WrongPlanet.net and posting. :D )

Wow! I give you a lot of credit being a manager, that's a good achievement! Is it hard for you to manage a good of people? I know I would have problems with this. I'm not the management/supervisory type. I don't like those responsiblities and I can't really handle the problems that most managers face, especially in the type of place I work for. I'm not good with confrontation. I either lose it or get scared away.

I can't advise you too much about distractions and focusing, I tend to have difficulty with this too. All I can say is try your best to focus on your work and things that are most important during the day and leave the small things on the side for the time being. Easier said than done, I know.

Well, Various AS people apparently have different strengths, but I THOUGHT every AS person had the benefits I did. I still think MANY do. The ones applicable to managing a place are:

1. Good logic and encyclopedic information to use it with.
2. Great episodic memory
3. The ability to basically tie it all together.

That means you ought to be able to figure out the best way to do something, the best person for the job, and how it is likely to be done. Apparently VERY few, ESPECIALLY very few managers, can do that.

Still, being a manager can be difficult. It seems NOBODY in MY industry does it right. When I was a manager, my boss corrupted most of my efforts, and employees wouldn't listen, etc.... On my current project, another person that I think has AS was hired as a manager. In most cases, HE had problems. What did HE do? He had ME do them, or did them HIMSELF!

Steve

Maybe they liked your singing voice. I could see you being distracted quite often with all that singing every time someone gets tipped.
