I'm not quite sure if this is an aspie thing or just me, so...does anyone else here do it?

I don't have a special interest as such, but I do go through phases of obsessing over things which really aren't good to obsess about, and it's like I just can't switch my focus to anything else. It's horrible. Some examples:

- mental illness (researching it all the time, wondering if I have it, leading me to become afraid I would actually start sort of subconsciously pretending to have one)

- food - this one has gone on for a long time. From obsessing over my weight and how much I eat to not being able to stop eating and redirect myself to something else when I start eating - so I keep eating until I feel sick and hate myself.

- suicide - obviously not a good thing to think too much about.

If anybody else does this -- getting stuck on obsessing over one thing you don't really even want to be thinking about and not being able to switch over to something else -- how do you deal with it?

I obsess over silly things, and I don't deal with them very well. I obsess over things like this:-

-Certain doors in my house having to stay shut because I get agitated if I can hear murmuring voices or tellies from another room when I'm in my room, it just distracts me and I can't ignore it, but I've just got to accept that I live with an idiot (my brother) who thinks he was born in a barn. If I had 50p for each time I shut a door behind somebody, I'd make a fortune.

-People staring at me in the street. This is very unsettling for me, and I obsess over it so much that it begins to take over my life. Rationally I know that it's natural for people to meet each other's eyes, but that still doesn't stop me from believing all these irrational thoughts telling me that people are looking at me to judge. Plus I can sense if somebody is staring at me when I'm not looking at them, which unsettles me more because I think ''why are they staring at me when I wasn't even staring at them?'' I do try to ignore it but deep inside I still get upset about it.

-What bus-driver's on what bus. Bus-drivers are my special interest, and when my favourite bus-drivers aren't on my bus (like at the moment  ), I start to get all upset and I have to get on the buses to keep up with what's going on with them and hoping that I will see them again.

-My routine. I don't really know if this is a silly thing as such, but I do obsess a bit over my routine. For example, if I went on a day course what I was officially told the exact hours, then suddenly a leader on the course told us different times, I would panic inwardly, for no reason really, except that I don't like being told one thing then somebody else telling me another. I know a lot of people feel the same.

Forestrose - suicide is one of mine too :) But i tried a majority of things in this catergory some time back so.

I think its either something you exhaust, and then replace, or you keep it forever and just keep adding relevant data to it, like on ongoing topic.

@ForestRose I hope you're seeking help for the suicide obsession as that's got to be a tough one, especially at 15.

With the rest of them, I completely understand. If I feel like I strained a muscle in my abdomen after a hard workout, I suddenly assume it's a hernia and spend hours researching it and days deathly afraid that I'm going to need emergency surgery or something. Pretty much any potential ailment results in a few weeks of obsession before realizing I was completely wrong. The only time I've ever been right was for hypothyroidism.

I think body dysmorphia is a big one too; obsessing over my physique and occasionally convincing myself that despite extreme dedication in the past three months, I haven't gained any muscle mass or definition.

And who knows what else. I actually suspect that over half my short-term obsessions are negative in nature. It's difficult and I've been dealing with it since I was a little kid but hey, 24 and I'm still here :) I do think that as I've aged, I've become much more reasonable though, so I'd have to venture that this was a more difficult thing to deal with as a 15 year old than now.

Suicide and my weight are perhaps my most trivial of obsessions.

My decision to quit sugar has severely affected my mood. Perhaps I have undiagnosed ADHD, but I feel I need some junk food in my life to get things done.

I had ice cream today for the first time in years and I now feel great!
