Hi:
I was wondering if anyone in here is on the spectrum and likes Autism Speaks vs ASAN.

Though they aren't perfect, I have found a lot of really good people and particularly self-advocates who are involved such as Kerry Magro. Being that I am on the spectrum and a professional, I myself would like to get involved to help show that I can be an Autistic/Aspie and still make a difference.

I like both. I would say I prefer ASAN slightly. I can feel confident that ASAN is making a positive impact. With Autism Speaks its just a matter of faith.

Autism Speaks used to NOT think we could make a positive difference. Since the Wrights left, it's become better, but probably still needs a lot of work.

Autism Speaks has gotten noticably not as bad at least publicly anyways. They still are involved in the #MSSNG genetics project which could be used for eugenics elimination. They have been instrimental in getting Applied Behaoiral Analysis based therapies becoming the "gold standard" treatment for autistic children. They still enthusiastically support ABA. While they appear better we really do not where the all the money they raise is going. They were so horriffic and did so much damage that it is very difficult for me to have positive feelings for them. On the other hand as said they do have good people working there. Besides Kerry Magro, Amy Gravino works for them. She moderated a few of the support group meetings I attended.

As for ASAN I feel they have lost focus since the election of Trump which occurred concurrently with Julia Bascom becoming executive director when Ari Ne'eman resigned. They are becoming just another orgnization in the "resistance". I understand medicaid is important to autistics but there are endless organizations trying to prevent Medicaid cuts and very few autistic run advocacy organizations so we really do not need the most notable one distracted. I also feel they are tone deaf to the growing feeling amoung many autistics that autism is the bigger problem not society. The Neurodiversity is wrongly seen by many autistics as clueless elitists who view autism as only a gift. While there are probably a number of factors involved ASAN is by far the most important Neurodiversity organization while this is occurring.

Hell no. Autism Speaks is evil. It has probably done more to harm Autistic people then anything else. It needs to go away.

I think then that we need another organization. Someone started a thread about a new one they're starting; it's called Nothing About Us Without Us and it's in the autism politics, activism and media representation forum. I'm joining; I want to be a writer for them.

CharityGoodGrace, I have heard of them but I would like to see a self-advocacy network where I see people on the spectrum with careers and positive feedback on how one can navigate the system, break out of their shells/rigidness and get away find ways to start careers.

I second that.

I am sure there is good in both organizations.
