Hello everyone, hope this is getting to you safe an sound.. I happen to live in Florida, right in the path way of Hurricane Irma ! ! We are far enough inland that we should just get the wind an rain for the most part. We're ready as we will be.. Here's the problem I'm having.. I'm trying to explain to my daughter who happens to be Autistic, that we may loose power and internet for a few days.. Oh my, you might have said Santa is not coming this year.. lol.. She is having a melt down to say the least.. She is 18 years old, but she functions on a 3ard or 4th grade level.. Sweet as can be.. but God forbid you take away her internet.. Now we could have left and went to a hotel, but she doesn't want to leave.. all I hear is " I'm not going " mind you I do have a back up plan if things do get really bad, I'm asking you guys for suggestions on how to make this a smooth and happy trip away from home.. Between the media and my child .. not to sure which storm is worse :| Take care everyone ..

Sorry, wish I knew something helpful to give to you. :(
All I can offer is that I have an ear infection, am in a cynical mood, and since you mention the media, why not call a talk radio show and ask them what the right and perfect thing to do with your autistic child is since they think they have all the answers.

Finally someone posts about this hurricane...I live in Florida also, a simple story about what might happen and what she can do during this time might help (called a social story). Is there anything she likes that might comfort her, besides internet-dependent electronics (like sensory calming items)?

Changes I can't control send me into shock. Maybe you should plan about helping her find and sort out her marbles afterward. Do you still have any stuffed animals or things that she liked before the 'net? They might help her through.

Good morning everyone... Well today is the big day !~! The hurricane should hit us tonight sometime.. thank you for your thoughts.. I truly appreciate it ! ! Today, my daughter seems to be much more at peace.. prayers work.. Thank God. She does have some stuff animals that she has had for many, many years that will keep her calm.. I explained to her she has to be the big girl and help mommy she seem to really like that idea.. I just pray that everyone in the State of Florida stays safe.. I ask everyone to say a prayer for us and to continue to pray for Houston ! it's a shame that it takes something this serious to bring people together, maybe a lesson can be learned from this to help your neighbor out from time to time, show kindness to strangers, it'll make your heart smile.. :) I will post again after the storm, and when we get out power back.. Take care everyone, have a Blessed day

Hoping you will soon be able!

Quote:
The initial damage assessments suggest power can be restored to parts of the state's east coast in just days, but some of the west coast will require rebuilding that could stretch out for weeks...

FPL said it would first repair any damage to power plants, transmission lines and substations, then prioritize critical facilities such as hospitals and water treatment plants. The electricity company would then turn its attention to areas that are home to supermarkets, gas stations and other community services.

Restoring power to Florida will take 'weeks, not days' in some areas

FPL had trucks, equipment and workers standing ready at key locations well prior to the storm, so now it is just a matter of time...

Well I'm here to say, My family and I are all safe and sound.. God is so good ! ! Amen :) The storm hit us around 9 pm and last till about 3 am or so.. Winds were up to 85 + miles per hour.. I still have power.. lost it a few times for a minute or so but came right back on ! ! :D All I can say that is prayers working in my favor.. thank you ! people that live not even 2 miles away don't have power.. We did loose a few shingles off our roof, and my pool screens are gone, but hey, I still have my home and my daughter is on her internet :) I pray everyone who is going through this Hurricane madness, best of wishes .. I will continue to pray for you all...
