Let's share the comments on old school report cards here.

By mere chance I found a very old school report card among my old stuff....it goes back to 1985-1986, so I was around 3 years old (School here starts at age 3).

I always suspected to have mild autism and this increased my doubts.

The teacher's comments are in French, so I will translate every box below

Image

Box 1:
"Travail scolaire: A mis du temps pour s'adapter à la vie de la classe."

Translation: Schoolwork: He took a long time to adapt to the class life.

Box 2:
"Expression Oral: Ses progrés se sont fait sentir dernierment

Translation: Oral expression: His progress has been felt lately

Box 3:
"Aptitudes Graphiques: <not clear> ... Réussit ses graphismes."

Translation: Grapic aptitude: Succeeds his graphic works.

In Box 4 she's mainly saying I love manual works.

Box 5:
"Development sensori-moteur: lent à réagir"

Translation: sensori-moteur development: Slow to react.

Last box:
Sociabilité: Se tient à l'écart de ses camarades.

Translation: Sociability: Stays isolated from his classmates.

Interesting! Were you ever evaluated for any kind of disability when you were younger?

Autism wasn't really known back then.

According to my parents, they suspected first I may be hear problems - turned out I didn't after testing me.

they also suspected me to have some sort of retardation and considering me to move me to special needs school , they got puzzled to find out i was doing fine in any non-social and non-verbal such as artwork and puzzle solving, so they let me stay in the regular school.

It's always interesting when you find old school reports, and read them to see what you were like back then.

My oldest school record is from around 2003. Fairly standard stuff in there, apparently I used to find it hard to sit still, and concentrate in lesson. There are a few mentions of me walking out of the classroom when I wasn't supposed to, during lesson time.

Apparently I was something of a perfectionist child, as I would sometimes leave lesson time to meddle with my finished art projects, because I wanted to improve them.

That doesn't surprise me. :D

There is quite a notable section where they speak about my selective mutism, and notes showing that I had stopped communicating through written work as well as verbally. Plus a bunch of referrals to speech therapists, and commentary on me as I slowly improved. :)

In the later years, there are notes on my written work (at this point I had started writing again). One teacher put that I had "a way with words". Quite ironic for a kid who used to be mute. :D

I don't remember what mine all said but everything was I needed improvement or was emerging. I had comments like "avoids eye contact" "troubles with change in the classroom" "Problems following rules" "Doesn't turn in school work when it's due and doesn't understand when the school work is due." I also saw a comment saying I have a severe learning disability. I can't remember if it was on the report card or IEP comment.

I just got my old pysch reports from school, I was referred for special education in the 1 st grade and put into a special day class for four years. Every three years they have to evaluate you every three years. Basically I had average intellect and below geade level in math but not significantly. Most of my issues was due to all social issues. I would freak out in class, run away, physically touching teachers, etc. The report show that I was socially anxious and I did not bond with other students and I was aware of it. No surprise there. What was surprising is they knew it, and really did really nothing about it. Maybe they could not. But every elementary report card shpwes thay fact, I did not get along with my peers. Although it is better, feels like a lifetime issue.

Mine just about said the same thing every time. "She does great on school work but she doesn't talk or participate in class".

Kindergarten had the widest range of comments, though, because it literally went from my teacher recommending that I skip a grade or two because of my intelligence to her recommending that I repeat the grade because I never played with other children. Not quite sure how that wasn't a red flag to my parents but I guess they just thought I was shy.

I will write in both English and French for your convenience. :)

J'ai eu problèmes similaires quand j'étais jeune. Je n'ai pas pu parler jusqu'à j'avais 9 ans. J'ai pu écrirer à la fois mais j'ai pu lit quand j'ai eu 4 ans.

I had similar problems when I was younger. I could not speak until I was 9. I could write around the same time, but I could read when I was 4.

Désolé pour le horrible grammaire potentiel.

I have a really brutal one written by a trainee teacher when I was 4 years old (it included photos). Comments included:

'Other children enjoy teasing her and this causes her to cry excessively. It can be difficult to console her.'
'Here she is trying to run. She is flatfooted and bottom-heavy, so struggles to keep up with the others.'
'This is her trying to paint her house, but she cannot master holding the paintbrush correctly.'
'She can read fluently for her age, but when she tries to engage in conversation she stutters. This causes her to become frustrated, as the other children tease her for it.' (some of the teachers did too!)

:(

I got a couple of harsh report cards in the 80s. I don't miss those days at all.

unfortunetly most of my report cards are lost to time. but i remember reading them not too long ago.

the comments were mostly

" Gets along well with others,"
"missing homework"
"does not pay attention"
"sensitive"
"inattentive"
"Inattentive"
"not paying attention in class"

i swear every single report car i got said i was inattentive but all my teachers said i got along with others, which is true (for elementary school anyways). i never fought with other kids, i never got picked on too viciously.

What i do remember is feeling like no one wanted to play with me and my parents would talk to the teachers and say " no she plays with the other girls!" and from my memory isnt true. particularly a group of girls in my class didnt acknowledge me except for the leader of the group who even invited me to her birthday! i remember really wanting to be her friend but i never knew how to approach her.

Mine were basically the same. "Doesn't interact with other students," every quarter, every year of elementary school.
