If you ever have an experience like this please try to remember how others involved might feel. Here is a facebook post I made:

I got hit by someone on my bike the other night and was left lying unconscious in the middle of the road.

Many of my contacts expect me to be angry with the hit and run driver and that is understandable. However I am having trouble feeling any anger at all right now.

Firstly, I can't remember the accident. I remember setting off from tesco, crossing a roundabout, cycling on down the road and the next thing I recall is waking up after the driver of a passing car (he had apparently seen the other car hit me) woke me up because i was unconscious in the middle of the road. Apparently he had turned around at the nearby roundabout after seeing the accident to see if I was ok...it took them about 5 minutes to rouse me. I was out cold.

The thing is I don't know what happened and how or why the other driver hit me. I know they did the wrong thing by driving on and maybe it was because they were an a**hole that didn't care, but on saying that maybe they were a decent person whom was scared and didn't know what to do.

Try not to judge them, they might be afraid too....

Before the accident i was a very angry person about injustices that have happened to me in my life and I was growing tired of it. Maybe after i get over the shock that will return, but I hope not. It was starting to wear me down and it was certainly making me feel very tired.

So spare a thought for the other road user...they may not have meant to hit me, they too may be frightened or worried or shocked. They may think they have seriously hurt someone (and other than £200 worth of damage...as far as i can ascertain before i collect my bike later this week) I seem to be pretty much ok. Yes i have a sore head, yes i have sore right side...shoulder, knee, ankle, neck and yes i feel half numb, a quarter shocked and and quarter keep bursting into tears, but I am still ok right now anyway. I have a mild concussio, some bruises and some broken gear but still I am here.

I hope the other road user is doing ok. I don't know what happened and I may never (I only know what i was told and that was another road user saw a car hit me and there was a wing mirror and debris on the road. It took around 5 minutes to rouse me and I was left lying unconscious on the road) but at least I am here right now and for once not feeling angry over the seeminly (or so called) bad hand life has dealt me.

I also have raging tinnitus but I've had that before and am used to it...i only point it out because as i type the noise in my ears is distracting me.

But please spare a thought for the other driver...you don't know right now what they might be feeling. And if they are out there and worried and by chance they ever see this, I'm ok. Don't worry about it!

Oh dear! I'm glad you're more-or-less okay... Take it easy and feel better!

Feelings are complicated, and if forgiveness is helping you cope with the initial shock, that's a blessing.

^I second this, glad you're okay.

Also, you're a better person than I would be about it.

Oh my. I'm glad you're OK. Amazed that you come out of this with such a strong focus on compassion and gratitude.

Bless you.

That sort of happened to me about last year or so. Minus being knocked out and being a driver part. 8O Instead of being angry or ranting at the careless driver, I just sort of apologized at the shocked driver, then walked out after being stunned for few seconds.

Then my acquaintances and family heard about it -- they bombarded me with advices on how to sue people.
But to me, it's just not worth a bother. :| Nothing is broken, not even my things.
Even that mental slight hesitation of crossing the road, it didn't last a month for me.

Just add further information, the police contacted me today and told me this (according to eyewitness statements)

A woman was driving up the opposite side of the road to me and saw me cycling along the edge of the road. I was not wobbling and was cycling correctly in straight line although there was a cycle path nearby that i was not using. This was because I was unfamiliar with the route and was not aware of its presence. Anyway the women saw me cycling along and could see the car behind me. He had time to overtake me but did not even try to do so. He hit me (and the witness heard the impact of the hit) sending me hurtling into the road and leaving me in a state of unconsciousness. He swerved upon hitting me but carried on driving regardless, he made no attemtp to stop.

After driving away another car appraoched me and nearly ran me over becuase i was lay in the road unconscious. They managed to stop in time without injuring me, but were in too much of a panick to help.

A while later another car came along, got out and tried to help me. They tried for over 5 minutes to rouse me and when they did finally wake me I was incoherent and unable to tell anyone anything but my first name....

When i got to teh hospital all the nhs were concerned about were my mental health labels...aspergers, depression ect and put my concussion symptoms down to my mental illness even they were new and as a result fo the accident. Whe i called for advice on the dizziness and memory issues a day or two after the accident, they tried to make out it was my mhs rather than taking into account the accident i had just had. What they did was some silly mhs rundown where i was asked if i was violent, or if i wanted to harm myself when i was calling about the side efffects of a concussion after a bad accident.

I will be making complaints, I will definitely say that, the mhs have gone way to far out of line. if anyone has bad character it's them, not me, they seem to lack humanity...

And this time I have witnesses.

This must all be so overwhelming, and confusing to process. What gets me is why the first woman didn't do anything, when she saw the accident? It's saddening that several people just passed by, until finally a 'Good Samaritan' came along.

As for the dizziness and memory issues, the phone advice nurse should absolutely have taken that more seriously, since you've had a recent concussion. And as for trying to pass it off as symptoms of a pre-existing mental health condition... I'm not a psychiatrist, but it seems common sense that your recent-onset symptoms are either caused by (a) concussion or (b) acute psychological trauma from this incident, basically the early stage of PTSD.

Don't let doctors gaslight you, or pass off your symptoms as 'who knows, doesn't matter, quit complaining'. It does matter, if it's interfering with your ability to function. If you didn't have these symptoms before, and now you do, it's clear that it was caused by the incident, and you need to get that documented in your medical records.

Take care, and keep us updated on how you're doing!
