autistic friend being abused by parents

I have a friend who has Asperger.s He tells me he is being abused, both emotionally and physically by his father. He says no one will believe him about the abuse because his father is a minister and a well-respected member of the community. Apparently, it is a VERY small town. I don't know all the details because this is an online friend.

Has he gone to the police? Even if most people won't believe him a police report should at the very least launch a small investigation into the claims.

In the UK we have a charity called Childline where any child who needs to talk confidentially about issues including abuse can call for help. https://www.childline.org.uk/get-support/contacting-childline/

I have looked for a similar thing in the USA, and found this https://www.childhelp.org/hotline/ where children can ring up and talk to counsellors and get advice about help.

Yes, I think he has. But the police don't believe him. His father knows many of the police officers.

Can he go to a homeless shelter and move out? He is an adult now so he can legally leave his home without his parents reporting him as a runaway or reporting him missing. How far away does he live? Can he come stay with you?

He says the nearest homeless shelter is too far and it would be impossible to walk to in the cold. Pretty much everyone in town is on his father's side since the fathers a very popular public figure in the community and friends with most of the police officers. If the police found him, they'd just drag him right back to daddy.

No. For one thing, he's in Tennessee and I'm in Ohio.

Has he ever tried getting a recording of the abuse (i.e. hidden camera or tape or digital voice recorder)? I know it sounds a tad bit complicated to do but if he had that sort of proof it should get something done.

He says he has a video of the abuse but is too scared to show it to anyone.

If law-enforcement officers won't respond, he could contact his state's Office of the Attorney General. One of the duties of every AG office is to enforce and investigate when local officers won't. If that doesn't work, he could contact his local U.S. Office of the Attorney. That agency really, truly will investigate.

They should. Psychological abuse ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_abuse ) is just another name for intimidation, coersion and threatening. Toss in the U.S. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and enforcement should be obvious.

They should. EA is very hard to prove but with cellphones now we have, it should be easier now to prove since we can record people now.
