I am in CBT and I have been told that I have suspected autism. I want to get an assessment, but I do not know how. Do I ask my psychologist?

Yes, that would be an excellent place to start. Of course, that psychologist may not have the required expertise, but they should be able to find someone who does.

For me, I started with my doctor. After talking about it for a few minutes and deciding that I did show some signs of ASD, he gave me a phone number I could call to find a psychologist who could do an assessment.

Since you're already seeing a psychologist, it he or she would be far more likely to know where to go for an assessment that a family doctor. So yes, asking your psychologist would be an excellent place to start.

Ask your psych for a referral. After my psychiatrist mentioned Aspergers, I asked for an assessment so I'd have an official diagnoses & might qualify for services & assistance related to autism. She gave me a number of a place to call but when I called I was told I needed a referral from her. I told my psych that & she filed a referral & then the place called me to set it up.
