Do you need more sleep than the other people around you? I am constantly tired, and have always needed 10-11 hours of solid sleep to get through a day.

Is that common for people with ASDs or is that just me? I have recently started taking iron and magnesium, which has helped a little, but I still seem to need a lot of sleep.

I'm not particularly depressed. I have depression attacks, but they seem to be burnout not depression as such.

Yes , I need more sleep than most people claim to need

It's harder to sleep than other people

For example, I could not sleep on the bus

Some people can

Small noises wake me up

I usually need an extra hour or two over the average. I spent 9 years working on the railway as a guard (The one in charge of the trains and who collects and issues the tickets etc). Now some early morning trains could be an hour or more ride as empty stock before I was needed, so most guards would sleep. Do you think I could sleep on the trains. I would lie there on the freshly cleaned carpetted floors of the trains but I just could not sleep. The movement was enough to keep me awake. I used to lie down across the seats, but I would get achy doing that so the floor was more comfortable... It must have been a rather wierd site seeing a train pull into the small terminus station with the lights off in the carriage, only to see me sit up in the middle of the coach when the passengers looked in from the outside early in the morning.... :D

I need about 7 quality hours. 8 or even 9 hours doesn't feel too different than 7. Anything less than 7 and things quickly go south. Anything less than 6 and i feel like im drunk. Less than 5 and i feel worse than when I'm sick with the flu or something.

I certainly feel like I need more sleep than most people. I have chronic insomnia issues so it's hard to measure exactly how much sleep I actually get since I'm awake for some of the time that I'm in bed, and probably what sleep I do get is typically poor-quality. I take melatonin and Trazodone, which let me sleep somewhat normally - otherwise I'm lucky to get half an hour of sleep a night. I can't remember ever having awoken feeling rested in my life, I always feel like I need more sleep no matter how much I've gotten.

When I don't get enough sleep I can't function at all

Barely cross the street

When I get enough sleep I can't function

Might as well try to sleep as much as possible

That way I do fewer things wrong

There's something I have to share with you about sleep and that is a weighted blanket. I don't know how to tell you how very much it helps. Somebody said it feels like a hug. It's hard to explain. But it's wonderful the instant I get that weighted blanket over me. I sleep like a log. My blood pressure has come down! I'm calmer when awake. I don't thrash in my sleep any more. It used to be I'd wake to find everything all over the floor around my bed. But with the weighted blanket, everything's where it should be.

The topic is amount of sleep needed. I don't know. I've had odd hours all my life. But this sleep is a superior quality of sleep. Just had to tell you.

p.s. re size to buy - I got twin. The bed is bigger but I only need to cover me. Blanket does not provide warmth.

Yes this sounds about right. I need to be very calm at bedtime to actually go to sleep. So time in bed is not really sleep.

Yes, I want to buy one. I'm really glad you've found it helpful. They're just so expensive! I got a cheap one for my daughter which isn't heavy enough for me but is enough to show me that one would help. Just need to save up $AU200-400! I'm hoping I'll be approved for disability support soon and this will help pay for some costs.

Seven or eight hours for me-I go to bed at 9 p.m. and get up at 5 a.m., although I usually don't sleep through until 5. Usually, I'm up at 4 a.m. When I had cats, the meow alarms usually went off about that time.

Is it cheaper to get an old blanket and sew some heavy items onto it? Metal washers?

A poll would be nice for this topic!
I need about 9 hours of high quality sleep to function properly.

I try to get nine and a half hours. Sleep deprivation drives me nuts pretty quickly.

One summer in my teens, I tried to sleep 12 hours a day, but couldn't get past 11. Since then, I have been sleep-deprived for almost all of my life. I recently realized that getting enough to drive safely is not enough to talk safely, so I've been making it an even higher priority, and feeling better. I can function on five hours, but have seldom managed seven until recently. I still can't usually go more than four hours, but sometimes, I can pee and get right back to sleep now instead of waking right up.
