When people think about schizophrenia, they may think about the movie “A Beautiful Mind” or a woman they passed on the sidewalk who seemed to be arguing with angry voices in her head. They are unlikely to picture a person with autism.

I was the opposite with signs of severe mental illness since I was 18 ,with it not being established I was on the spectrum till I was 62. Either way there needs to be a more intelligent approach to the issue.

I think that thorough assessments (like neuropsychological evaluations) need to be more routine.

Lots of people have fallen through the cracks because they weren’t properly assessed. People assume that a brief visit with a psychiatrist is sufficient, but it certainly isn’t.

If you were diagnosed in 1975 that was 5 years before autism was recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

I'm not saying they could have worked it out precisely in 1975 or even 1980 with the knowledge base then. They could though have seen there was more going on than mental illness even if it was difficult to put a precise name to it. They could though have worked it out more precisely since 1994 when Asperger's became a diagnosis.

I can tell you my personal experience with Psychosis.

I almost got killed, because since I have little knowledge of social rules when I am fine, when I was on a highly psycothic event (psychiatrist called it bouffè-delirante, don't know the english word) I forgot all the social and civic (basic) rules so I almost got killed by the police.

Luckily, they found out I was just a lost guy and they had me recovered into the hospital.

After a few visits with the psychiatrist he told me I was asperger. But I don't know still how I managed to survive my 2-3 days of Psychosis.
