Are they stereotyping me?

I was diagnosed with aspergers in 1997. 4 years ago I had a mainstream job but lost it because of mental health reasons.


Recently I have been forced to work part time by the autistic society and my parents in a sheltered ‘workshop’ with people who are also autistic and have Down syndrome/other disabilities.




Do you think thats stereotyping me a little big putting me in a workshop?

The thing that you have to do....is prove that you could make it in a mainstream job.

Prove them wrong.

I personally think that's stereotyping, one way or the other. I hate how we're grouped with everyone else with different types of disabilities, almost as if we're all the same.

is autism the same as down syndrome?

No, they're different from each other.

My point that I mean to make is it seems different mental disabilities tend to be put together as the same thing when clearly there are different types, and the experience is unique for every sufferer. It may not be the fairest observation but I have seen it get treated this way.

Down Syndrome is a 100% chromosomal disorder. When you have Down Syndrome, you have 3 Chromosome 21's. It's something very, very specific.

There are a few Down Syndrome people who are also autistic----but most are not autistic.

Autism is a Spectrum (and maybe a syndrome) which has many causes----a few of which are chromosomal and almost always more subtly chromosomal than Down Syndrome. Most autism, probably, has a vaguely genetic (not necessarily chromosomal) causation.
