I had a chance to speak with a trusted neighbor in my apartment complex regarding how our neighbors are faring. I was told people are doing good in our complex. My neighbor's work is helping disadvantaged segments of our population receive services. She was telling me how the current circumstances are requiring that her work must be done in a way that minimizes human contact i.e., social-distancing.

I trust this neighbor - as she is acquainted with another neighbor who donated a small-box of basic supplies to an elderly couple who also lives in our complex (our complex has about two-dozen living units).

I sense very-good vibes in a complex of friendly people - hence I had offered (without any specifics) to offer basic help if ONLY the need arises (which in a way, i hope NEVER happens) - that is leaving basic supplies on neighbor's doorsteps.

My neighbor asked me to clarify specifics; I had immediately stated that I was glad that people in our complex seem to be faring good, which is a favorable social dynamic in itself. I had stated that I'm already helping family who live nearby.

Once again, I hope the need NEVER arises -- where there would be a situation in struggling to maintain that balance to give just the right amount of basic help (donating basic essential supplies ONLY) without encouraging those rare-few people from "taking advantage of my goodwill!"

I sense I had pretty-much conveyed that tacit understanding that I'm a private person to my neighbor - yet, I feel I must clarify that I hope the current circumstances of the Corona-Virus don't arise to a severity where I, and many others would be grappling with just how, and what constitutes appropriate levels of assistance! ONCE AGAIN, I hope this will be unnecessary - I hope I myself (or my family) will NEVER require help!

When I first spoke with my neighbor, I had conveyed that positive sentiment that we will get through the current circumstances -- in a way, I will be reinforcing that positive sentiment when I speak with my neighbor again!

There is a group in my area that buys food for people who are self isolating. When we are allowed to leave the house again (my sister had a temperature) I plan to be part of it. I like the idea of helping those who can't go out either because they are vulnerable or trying to help keep the disease contained.

If I could drive, I would offer to buy groceries and stuff for my neighbors on either side of our house. We're on friendly enough terms and one is an older gentleman, the other has a family member who has/recently has had some health problems, so I would gladly get stuff for them so they didn't have to go out. Heck, I might even print something out that has my name and phone number on it and says that I am happy to pick up groceries and stuff for anyone in the neighborhood who is higher risk or is in close contact with someone who is high risk and stick it on the mailbox. But unfortunately, I can't drive, so there's not much I can do :(

I'm usually an early volunteer, but this time, I'm in a high-risk group. So far, I can't even hire a shopper. It does not help that my VOIP 'phone died years ago, and I can't find a reasonably priced replacement. Maybe all I need is a "burner 'phone" but I don't know where to start shopping.

clinically depressed, autistic, broke, unemployed, no car, weak immune system, eczema ulcerative colitis

A former classmate offered to go grocery shopping for me.

Smoke and mirrors s**t

He hasn't done it yet

If and when he goes :P grocery shopping  he will make it sound like he dragged my worthless corpse out of a burning building

Actually it is worse, in this situation, because I don't know when or if that ass hole is showing up with anything

So I postpone my own grocery shopping

WhatsApp is an app that has free calling to anyone else who has WhatsApp. You can install it on you PC for free and there are no ads. Works just like a phone - fast, easy, and you can video chat or send voice recordings (I get messages from my grandson - love it!). I haven't used it on my computer but I'm sure it will work fine. The phone app is amazing.

My PC runs linux, and is both deaf and blind. I do have an old Windoze laptop - would that work as a 'phone to call any number? TIA,

Have supply kiosks containing such items as toilet-paper, cleaning-supplies, and canned-goods been established in your neighborhood? Such kiosks function on the honor-system - that is people can take what they need, and donate unneeded items to the kiosk.

How can one encourage kiosks in their neighborhood?

I feel that giving the location, and information on the specific contents of kiosks to my neighbor (To whom I've become acquainted) would be an excellent way to be of assistance!

No, because I've had a cold since this thing started and of course no one wants someone coughing to touch their deliveries.

WhatsApp runs on Windows 8/10 or Mac, or most newer phones.

I only have Win 7. There's a Skype function available - is it worth exploring?

No idea, sorry. I did a little research and there's an app called Google Hangouts that will actually assign you a phone number as well. I've never used it but I trust Google.

ADDENDUM: The responses on helpful technology-APPs might best fit in another discussion-thread. This discussion thread is best when focusing-on concrete efforts to help our local communities.

In short, what specific efforts can boost the establishment of supply kiosks??

Kiosks can:

* Encourage social-distancing.

* Curb the pressures on local supermarket supplies.

* Assist people who cannot (or don't want to) go to supermarkets.

Seeking local online listings (and word-of-mouth) of kiosks, and tables offering items to trade (by the honor-system) essential items e.g., toilet paper. The NextDoor APP is seeing an increase in such listings!
