Anyone found anything to help with being unable to turn your brain off at night and stop thinking, and being unable to fall sleep for hours?

I’ve struggled with this since every night, all night, since I was 5. When I take sleeping pills, I never feel well-rested in the morning. It’s as if my body knows I “cheated,” as if it’s not “real” deep and true sleep. Can never stop thinking to fall-asleep. And trying to not think makes me think of “not-thinking.” And even when I do fall asleep, usually terrible dreams and terrors. I just so much envy peaceful and quick sleepers. Help!

I don't get insomnia much these days, but I have I never the past and it sucks. Sorry you have to deal with that.

For me, the best remedy is exhaustion. I'm not sure if you are able to, but physical activities be they exercise, yard work, whatever, will knock me out when nothing else will. I'll force myself to get up early evenif it means only a hour of sleep, push through the day doing as much as I'm able to, and evenif it doesn't work onday one, it generally does by day two or three.

Other times, I need to deal with the thoughts in these. Sometimes it's just nonsense and I can't figure out why, othertimes I know why. If I know why, I try to deal with the issue to make it a nonissue. If I don't know why, I might try drawing or some creative activity to give the nonsense an outlet. I also cut out screens a few hours before bed and avoid junk foods.

I wish I had more ideas for you, but I'm not in an insomnia phase right now and for the love of it all, when im not in the middle of something, it's likemy brain starts to forget what it was like being there. I know I try more than that, but I can't remember what. Hope other people come around with more ideas for you.
