So... I'm watching a movie and suddenly see some metallic thing, making a scraping sound, but not atrocious... when I realize it's a grass cutter... in the past I was even booted out of my home due to reacting badly to the ones with an engine, but people are simply too lazy and sadistic not to use them...

Like, literally, it's the first time I see this manual one without an engine... so much quieter... to be booted out due to people's laziness... I'll never stop hating people...

People aren't sadistic for using power tools.

People are not "booted out" for other people's laziness, but for their own actions.

It must be hard living in a world where people just go about their daily affairs, intent on causing you pain and enjoying every minute of it. That's what sadism is, right?

You need an attitude adjustment - and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. Most people don't go out of their way to make you miserable. It's incidental. Get over it, or be kicked out of a LOT of places. Your choice.

I must admit, a lot of NTs do like the sound of their own noise. Like when these men outside my apartment kept revving their sports car until it banged, and when it banged they would cheer, then try and do it again. It was really annoying to hear. I was going to buy them a toy car to play with until they grew up enough to understand that a vehicle is not a toy to play with.

BeaArthur, noise cancelling can't magically cancel all noises, only consistent ones, so f*ck your attitude! If you're noisy expect a backlash!

I wonder what causes people to develop negative stereotypes of people with ASD.

I get where the OP is coming from, I get angry and frustrated about all of the noise in my neighborhood. I also know the only way to control it is to move. Mostly I keep the windows closed, keep the (supposedly) sound-dampening curtains closed, and put on my noise-canceling headphones.

Thing is, after the seemingly millionth time someone is cutting their grass when it's a millimeter higher than the last time, revving their loud-on-purpose car, driving by on a loud-on-purpose motorcycle, letting their dog bark for hours, or shooting off fireworks you start to wonder what is wrong with people. It might just be where I live but, it seems like no one cares how their actions and choices affect others anymore.

Regarding the fireworks, I have written to the municipality and police to ask them to please consider the people in the neighborhood with PTSD and autism. Nothing ever changes, still have the massively loud booming kind and the ones that are a step down from professional (mortars, I think?) being set off here throughout the spring, summer, and fall. One of the reasons I love winter. The quiet is magical.

I probably should've said - most fireworks are illegal here, can only have very small ones. That's why I wrote the municipality and police.

They do set off fireworks for New Year's Eve but, very few and only that one night. From Spring to Fall it's randomly throughout the week(s), especially for the two weeks before and after the 4th of July. My dogs are terrified of them as well so it's like utter chaos here as soon as there's a boom.

I don't expect people not to cut their grass, they have to here or can be turned in for a warning, up to a fine. I have a neighbor that is ridiculous about it though. We have a theory that he doesn't like to be in his house so he cuts grass - his grass, the neighbor's grass, the next door neighbor's grass. It's like he's out there with a ruler, "Hah! It's a millimeter longer! Time to get the mower!"

I think maybe viewing it from a different perspective might help. I like having a nice yard especially in the backyard because that's where I spend time training my dogs and grilling and smoking meat. (I do live in Texas afterall ) So maintenance is a must if I want a clean nice environment.

Do I like the sound of the mower or tiller. No I don't. But it's a necessity. I've tried using a non motorized one, it's very difficult especially if it's humid and takes 3 times as long to do.

I have extreme noise sensitivity but that doesn't stop me from using power tools etc. I actually asked for a nail gun for my birthday. I like to build stuff... power tools make that easier and more consistent.

My advice invest in some gun range ear plugs that mold to your ear. Then wear active noise canceling headphones over them. (Key word Active). I bought some skullcandy ones for about $130 a lot less than the $400 bose. The reviews were good and I'm happy with them.

I refuse to let sensory processing disorder and hypersensitivity run my life completely. Some days it does beat me but many days nope, I gear up and do what I enjoy doing even if I'm exhausted afterwards.

I don't think the people around you are intentionally making a racket to upset you. It's just not a problem for them so they don't notice. Yes, if someone's blaring music and reving engines at midnight that's not acceptable. But regular yard maintenance and occasional power saw etc isn't meant to harm anyone.

And y'all were talking about fireworks. I live in the south and people will shoot off fireworks for any reason too. All throughout the summer, it's really random.

I figured out that the lawn mower thing isn't just the sound, it is that the mower sound specifically has become a reminder that I can't control my environment all of the time. When we looked at this house I knew the position in the neighborhood (surrounded by houses in an amphitheater shape) was going to be a problem but, it was the best house at the time for us and has a huge fenced-in yard for the pups.

I completely understand about power tools. My husband has a wood shop in the garage and we just finished a complete remodel on our kitchen - many, many days of very loud noise. He warns me when he's going to use something particularly heinous like "the annoy-atron 2000" (multi-tool). Listening to that cut through the metal mesh in the wall corners was especially fun. My new kitchen is a-freaking-mazing though!
