As part of my job I expect to have to deal with violent situations occaisionaly. It is quite draining when it happens, as with the 'adrenaline rush' hits but does not go away very quickly. Yesterday, (Friday) I happened to be involved in one where I was assaulted, (not badly), then today I responded to another violent incident, and on the way home on the train, there were a group of 6 or so drunken football 'fans' who started to threaten another group of passengers; when we got off the train, they assaulted some of the passengers, so a couple of others and myself intervened, all be it verbally, and one then threatened to stab me! Further, now I am totally wired, and can't settle. I've taken some Gamma Ammino Butilic Acid (GABA) to calm my nureons down a bit, been for a run, and had a rum and coke, but still cant let it go. I am not looking forward to work, and feel a 'malfunction' comming on. :( When will NT's get over each other!! !! !! !

Gamma Amino Butyric Acid.

Anway, what is your job?

I think that you should come and join me for a drink; I'm not really going to sleep much either.

steelmaiden, seen in his profile he's a screw, (this is usually a slang term for a security guard in a prison) its a risky job but someone has to do it, my mom has been doing it for about 2 years in max security in the womans prison somewere in tennessee. sadly she was fired when they had found a pack of cigs on her while signing in for the day (zero tolerance for tabacco)

she was lucky, all the inmates liked her and interacted well with no fights or problems.

Ah ok.

For some reason this reminds me of a hilarious text message from a friend:
"Holy banana my aunty used to work in Broadmoor"
It just sounds... hilarious. Don't know why.

Believe it or not, tobacco at least USED to be a kind of currency in prison.

BTW The last few times I took GABA my brain tingled. It was a NICE feeling, etc... but a bit worrysome considering that an overdose of GABA can cause problems. Has anyone else noticed such a thing?

I knew this woman when I worked for Gateway 2000, Inc that used to work in Pelican Bay, CA. She was a little butch and said they treated her well.

Try a hot bath and, rather than light the room in the normal manner, use a single candle.

Works for me.

Perhaps you should consider other, less stressful employment options.

As I mentioned in another topic, fear and the way it affects the body and brain is something that ALL Aspies/Auties are very sensitive of.

Fear, is an automatic reaction to something unfamiliar, or something sudden. This reaction is build in as a safety net to protect all species, including humans.

Fear activates a series of action, reactions and interaction within the body. The production of adrenaline and noradrenaline is the first in a series. The increase of the level of testosterone in the body is also one that helps eventually to either flight or fight and survive.

The chemistry of fear s dual. Adrenaline and the other hormones create a dual responce. As must as we become anxious of what caused the fear, we also become extremely attracted to it. Fear and the hormones create a intence pleasure almost erotic (sexual stimulation) in the brain and body.

This also explains why the adrenaline rush is also felt as a kick! and why people get addicted to dangerous sports or activities like roller coaster riding.

The truth is that as much as you are afraid in the line of work that you do you also become a bit addicted to the 'fear' in harbors.

Because of the dual expression of fear in the body and brain, the two hormones that balance each other out are adrenaline/testosterone and dopamine (the pleasure effect). This means that by going running you increased the adrenaline, alcohol does not help bring it down, and the more tired you get the more the testosterone affects your brain and body making you feel restless and aggressive.

What does help? Increase the dopamine. Do things that you find pleasant. Watch your favorite comedy DVD, or sit com. Get a massage that stimulates the deep muscles and releases tension. Create situations where you can laugh. Laughter is the best way to produce dopamine. As Edal said take a bath AND watch a comedy on TV!

Hope this helps
Star

giaam,
As well as taking edal and Star's advice, it may also help to acknowledge that you have just faced a life threatening situation, and get 'debriefed' - as in a proper 'critical incident stress debriefing'. Is there anyone at your workplace that you can access for this? Another option, is to do your own - maybe write it all down in as much detail as you can remember. It helps if you include everything that you saw, smelt, heard, physically felt, thought and emotionally felt, etc.

Hi everyone,
'Big Thanx' for your responses, and helpfull ideas, I will have a go at implementing them.
The strange thing is, I love my job, (the discilpline / order etc.). Its a shame the place is full of NT's on both sides that all have something to prove!
Statistically there is a violent incident in prisons nationaly, every 13 minuets. However, I am based in an office at the moment, and thanx to paying so much attention to how people interact, and the 'being honest factor', I get on pretty well with the 'lads'. It just takes 'one' to upset everything though.
Thanx again for your responses :D
