Does anyone else get really irritated by apparently well meaning people trying to force you into being social? I am really REALLY uncomfortable with social interaction and even when I do I get things wrong all the time, so I can't see the point. I hate it because it seems like everyone is trying to force me to make friends, but I already have a friend who I see occasionally.

Yeah, this is not fun. My girlfriend was out tonight with a couple of collegues from work, they went to see harry Potter. As I'm not a Potter fan I stayed at home and watched a couple of DVDs whilst working my way through a bar of Swiss chocolate. For me this is a good way to spend an evening

Fifteen minutes before the end of the second movie I get a phone call, they've seen the movie and now they're off for a meal and they'd LOVE me to join them.

Ummm...................

No

Apart from the fact that I was enjoying my DVDs and chocolate the thought of being stuck in a restaurant with three women (two who I don't know) is not my idea of fun, yet it took a ten minute phone call before she was convinced that I wasn't coming. So, the DVDs are finished and now I'm on WP.

I have had the same experience that you guys have had. Many people say I should make friends but they don't seem to understand that I like being alone and I enjoy my own company. People are just annoying and I don't like to be around them. Why do people do this to me?

Confession time....

...how many of us have hid the car around back and pretended not to be home and can't live without caller id for this very reason?

*raises hand*

Why does everyone feel the desire to "save" us from our solitude? :?

How about when it's on a smaller level, like when people kind of push you to go talk to someone because you "should?" (usually this comes up at work functions) Or make a comment that you aren't "mixing?"

I'm perfectly comfortable sitting quietly in social settings (wasn't always, but am now). If someone wants to talk to me, they can, and actually, often when I decide to sit alone because I want a break is when people come up to me! So why should I feel like I need to seek conversation every second?

Also, if I "should" go talk to someone, they should introduce me, help me out!! It's good manners anyway!!

I dunno about hiding the car, but I think the only reason I have caller ID (and no answering machine) is to see whose calls I'm ignoring. :|

quoted for truth. i can't initiate meaningful social interation and the only time i go out with friends is when they call and invite me.

it irritates me when people ask what i'm doing or where i'm going just for the sake of making conversation... even when it has no effect on them. if it was important for them to know what i was doing, OBVIOUSLY i would tell them!

yeah, how could anyone be so tactless as to talk to someone who's watching tv? and then get offended when asked to wait for the commercial? completely illogical. but apparently it's socially acceptable!

I can agree totally...
I don't get why people always force you to talk to people, even when you say that you don't want to, they tell you again!
I would rather sit quietly in social situations. When I do though, people always ask me if I am upset or angry. This is usually at family gatherings or at my course. I am not upset or angry at the time. But by the time they have finished asking me how i'm feeling, I do feel mad because I want to be on my own and people wont leave me alone!

Yup totally hate it. My company has these social events every month and they always ask me to come. Have they not realised I do not like these functions. They dont bother asking the software developers, so cant they leave me alone. It gets too much at times I just want to say "I don't want to F****** come", of course I don't mean to be rude it just gets frustrating having to come up with an excuse not to go each time.

It is also our companies 20th anni this year and we have a weekend away coming up. I am NOT looking forward to this at all. As it takes up one working day, someone from each team needs to stay behind. I totally offered myself, but they said my boss will stay - damn damn damn!! !!

OK I can see how socialising can be important and enjoyable to NTs but hate being forced into it

I have been invited out several times for this month , of course i wont go and it feels odd to have been invited because of my hubby. people cant win with me , if i go and people talk to me i feel really uncomfortable especially with the greeting kisses and hugs and the how are you doing banter , what is with all that they dont know me , they dont care so why bother asking. but then when nobody speaks to me i feel ignored and even wierder like people dont like me and im sat alone and people are staring at me waiting for me to do something.

Few things are more annoying in the world than having a teacher trying to force you to socialize with your classmates. Whenever some project comes up, I'm always more than happy to do it alone, even if it means much more work, but no teachers ever allows it.

Argh.

Agreed. It is usually not a good idea and I get antagonistic and defensive when I am with people I do not want to be with. If I like it or don't mind then it's fine by me. :)
