Who else here finds that their hands seem to take on a mind of their own when talking to someone?
My hands just seem to fly all over the place when I am talking, and when I am having to listen to someone else talk for a long period, I find myself getting agitated and attention veering in other directions.

I typically control my hands when talking. Sometimes clenching them behind me back. Unless it's friends, and then I do all the hand signals, like a mime talking, it was this big, and so on...

autism specialist/speech therapist told am that am do not do gesturing and don't understand most of it [only know waving as a person is leaving and thumbs up sign],am think am do some gestures,if signing can be classed as it.

mum swings herself a lot when she speaks, always thought she was having a seizure.

Well I mean, it isn't sort of gesturing as in... I mean, I wave my hands about wildly a lot. Energetically. I am sure I never used to do that. Or maybe I simply didn't notice.

I measure things I'm talking about ...

Then I see the person looking at me as if to ask, "you really are daft, aren't you???"

I do jestures when I'm trying to explain something visually. Like I'll outline the shape of something I'm trying to describe with my hands or I'll do little pointy things with my fingers when I'm giving directions. Of course I often forget to mirror stuff so that it's correct from the other persons perspective.

Not sure it really helps the other person out though. I think it's mainly something I just do out of habit.

i find myself playing with any near object obsessively until the comvervation is over... fiddling is what my parents would call such an act..
ive alwways had to speak with my hands in order to take attention away from my face and to hopefully show the person more of my emotion through hands and not facial expression which i rarely show...

The same. I'd feel foolish doing something with my hands when talking to someone; that person would think that I can't control myself. Yeah, I realize it's not true, after all many people are gesturing and nobody finds it stupid but it I'd perceive it artificial and irrelevant.

My boyfriend says I use hand gestures sometimes but not as often as lot of people.

I do hand gestures, if I'm describing something, a shape or a size, I illustrate it with my hands. I sometimes do hair twirling too, twisting it into coils, if I start getting bored talking to someone. It probably looks a bit weird so I try not to do that.

If I'm feeling a particularly intense emotion (usually of the positive side), I tend to over gesture. Likewise, when I'm trying to explain something (and especially when I cannot explain it as I'd like to), I over gesture.

Otherwise, I twirl my hair, bend my fingers backwards, or clasp them in front (which makes a friend laugh; "you look like one of those old mothers!"; whatever). I have no idea what to do with my hands.
