How long did it take for you to get diagnosed?

I'm not sure how long it took for me to be diagnosed. I know I was real hard to diagnose because of my hearing loss and it caused my speech delay and developmental delay and then I was in special ed with the other ret*d kids for two years. Took my shrink about a year to even suspect I may have Aspergers and my Mom said she wanted a psychaitrist to look it over so she recommended this guy. Took him a few months to diagnose me. Shame I don't remember that day. But it wasn't a true diagnoses my mom says. In my teens my school counselor thought it was just a coincidence and my shrink I saw when I was 16-18 thought so too and the person I am seeing now, psychologist, psychaitrist, specialist, I don't know what she is so I call her a shrink thinks it's a true diagnoses so she might think it was also just a coincidence. But I found out after talking to my mother on the phone, only took her five minutes to come to a conclusion I have AS, not any other kind of autism. WTF. Took her that quick? What did my mother say to her.
She said all the stereotype stuff about it is just bullcrap because just because you aren't good at math or into sci fi or tech stuff doesn't mean you don't have it.

I was originally diagnosed with PDD-NOS in 1988 at age 9 (I checked with my parents, it was 1988. I wasn't sure if it was 1988 or 1991 when I was diagnosed).

I was eventually diagnosed with AS in 1996 at age 16.

I am borderline AS/NT.

Tim

After many years of misdiagnoses and mistreatments, I was finally correctly diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome as as adult.
I don't have any real obvious "signs" other than social difficulties. They tell me that I will always have trouble obtaining services
for Asperger's Syndrome because I appear more neurotypical than someone with Asperger's.

I was diagnosed with regular autism as a small child but they changed it to Aspergers when I was in the 8th grade.

it does not seem to matter how severe the level of aspergers is,and the level of support need of the aspergan, social services and other support groups [unless they are specialist autism groups] tend to judge aspergans as being all the same, and not needing any support.

if need services, try getting an advocacy group involved, they could also help with getting whatever support is needed and a fair assessment with social services for example, they are good for speaking on behalf of people who aren't getting the things they need, but it's doubtful they would give an SS support worker to an aspie who is very high functioning,at least in the uk,they only accept those with moderate or above difficulties and support needs due to funding.

Considering I was observed from age 2 that would be 23 years.

It took me many years to get a clear diagnosis. For years the clinicians were not too sure what was wrong with me. I was always "labeled" as been atypical, having emotional problems, learning disabled and exhibiting some autistic traits. It wasn't until many years later when I graduated college my dad showed me an article talking about Asperger's syndrome. We never even heard about Asperger's Syndrome until this article. I decided to see a Psycharist who dealt with diagnosing people who think they might have Asperger's Syndrome. This was back in November of 2001.
