I've often wondered about that. I'm reminded of the TV programme Dear John (here in the UK) about a divorcee (John) who joins a group of other divorcees who meet up to talk about their problems. Then Kirk joins the group; tight leather trousers, silk shirt unbuttoned down to his belly-button, and a huge medallion dangling over his overly hairy chest. He swaggers about, talking about 'chicks' and 'getting on down' (it's a 1980s sitcom!). One day John pays an unexpected visit to Kirk's home, and finds a mild-mannered, bespectacled loner in a pullover and slacks. it turns out this chap dresses up in the snazzy gear and becomes Kirk to try and overcome his shyness and depression. Alright, this is exaggerated for comic purposes, but I've often wondered what it would be like to invent a totally different character from my usual one, someone who would do things I wouldn't normally do and go places that I would never normally go to. I guess at the end of the day, you just need to live with yourself, and you shouldn't need to have to do all that dressing up and pretending stuff. Nice daydream, though!
