The Oregonian newspaper reported that one in five people living in group homes are abused or neglected. So now group homes are on the state's radar. It's hard to get good care givers because the pay stinks. I'm trying to create ideas now so that I can be in the state's face about fixing the problem.
What would appeal to some aspies to design a care giver job that they'd like?
There was a post on WP from an aspy who said she(?) was a care giver and then listed what would work for aspy care givers, like being allowed to dress and act aspy. I'm wondering what kinds of things would work for aspies to like being care givers.
My aspy son watches my severely autistic daughter sometimes but all his role is, is to make sure she's safe. Other than that, he works on his computer which is fine with her. She doesn't want people following her around all day.
I'm thinking that if I were designing a care giver job that I, personally, would like, where the pay was lousy, I'd like it if I could bring my dog to work with me. I'd like to be allowed to use my creativity in my care giving, like singing and drawing with the auties. I'd like to have time to just sit around and not be pressured at times during the workday. I'd want the group home owners to provide a pet sitting, house sitting service for me, for free when I go on vacation. I'd want the group home owners to advocate for me when I have aspy related problems and need to find resources. And I'd want the state to provide the same kinds of health benefits that they give to state employees.
I think a group home could do all that extra stuff without it costing a lot of extra money. Getting the state to provide medical benefits would be the only real extra cost.
