I have read a few posts where someone was sounding off against NTs, and specifically I read one post where the person said that maybe for a change, the NTs should work around us rather than the other way around. Something like that.

This is an NT world. We are the minority. We have to learn to live in it, and I think it can be done.

I'm going to give an analogy, and feel free to tell me what's wrong with it. And btw, keep in mind the title of this forum: Wrong Planet.

In my little part of the country, there are people who come from other countries: Korea, Viet Nam, Mexico, and so on. They create their own little enclaves, and even put signs up in their language. They want to be taught in their language, or at least have some kind of assistance.

It is annoying to most of us who live here because we have the expectation that if they are going to come live here, they should learn the rules and learn the language and try as best they can to fit in.

I see the cultures who are successful here where I live, and they didn't ask for any special help. They rely on each other. The cultures who aren't successful are the ones dependent on government assistance, whether financially or in school.

On a larger level, we are living in an NT world, fair or not. We don't need to ask for special treatment. We have to learn to fit in, to live by the rules, etc. It's not the NTs fault that they are the majority.

Why can't we just rely on each other in our communities to learn how to make it in this world?

I understand that some people are not able to work or go to school because maybe their affliction with AS is more severe than others, but I think every Aspie has a gift of some kind that they can use in this world and be successful.

Einstein was successful, and Bill Gates, and Steven Spielberg.

I didn't know that I had both ADHD and AS when I was growing up, so I wasn't told that I wouldn't be successful, or that I would have seriously problems in the NT world. And keep in mind, I was also a high school drop-out. I didn't obtain my GED or the equivalency.

Wrong Planet is a nice start. It would be nice if it extended to our physical communities. We can absolutely be successful in the NT world.

I hope I haven't offended anyone. And please feel free to tell me what is wrong with my thinking.

[begin sarcasm]Sure, we should also return to beating left-handed folk when they do not emulate the right-handed majority.

Blind people are the worst. At least dyslexics will eventually read the same text the majority do even if they do present needs the majority don't;, the blind act like they need their whole own documentation system, plus they expect to take their dogs all kind of places we do not normally allow dogs. Deaf people are pretty bad too. Many of them do not even bother to lip read but instead expect to be communicated with in a manner that better fits their needs instead of that of the majority. This is clearly an issue - since some deaf people can lip read, obviously they all could if they wanted, just like everyone on the autistic spectrum can be Bill Gates or at least Rain man.[/sarcasm]

It's not an NT world. It's just the world. To consider yourself to be in the minority is what I call the ghetto attitude.
We all have our own ways of dealing with things. I think too many people with AS have come to believe that there is one, and only one, normal way to deal with things and any other way is a path to misery and failure.
EVERYONE has to learn to live in the world. And it isn't only people with AS who can find that extremely difficult.
Just because one is an "NT" doesn't mean that person is having an easy time of it.

Immigrants choose to come to America.
People don't choose to have AS.

You are right of course and we have to learn strategies to deal with this world, however the world could use more awareness too in the very least.

Wow. I am new to this board. Let's get real people. Putting the burden on others to adjust to aspies doesn't make sense to me.

I'm only grateful that Einstein didn't convince himself he had to be like the majority.

I understand your point, and it's a good one. However:

If that were the case, then it would become necessary for Aspies to create their own societies oblivious to NTs where they can accept each other and live with each other without NT's interfering, or preventing their talents and gifts from being seen.

Let's face it, kids. The blind and the deaf get all of these privileges for their disabilities because they have much better lobbying groups than we do. Instead we have idiots like that autism society that represent autism as a whole, yet have a very limited view of what it actually means to have and function with autism on a daily basis.

I do think that it is our job to figure out how to get along in our worlds. However, we also have to be willing to take on the responsibility of educating others to help us in that mission. The world will have to learn to get along with us at some point, but it's not going to happen yesterday and it's not going to happen just because we all happen to be on WP bitching about it. It happens by all of us taking the moral high ground and educating the stupidity of the rest of the world.

WE ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN CHANGE THE FACE OF AUTISM.

There, I said it, I'll just be over here in the corner nailing my hands and feet to this peice of wood so I can be crucified. Would someone help me with that hammer? LOL

Something else, though. Again, I am seeing NTs being bashed, and I think it's wrong. If we are able to see that people have differences, then we should be patient with them.

Let me see if I can state this right:

Instead of getting mad at them for not understanding us, and for maybe taking advantage or victimizing, be patient and try to educate.

I read a book called "The Speed of Dark." I might have already mentioned it. By the end of the book, the author caused me to stop seeing Aspies as different, and instead I saw them as just people who were different.

NTs are just people who also have differences. They have a lot of problems, too, but just different problems from the ones we have.

We have to figure out how to live in their world. It IS their world, because there are more of them than there are of us.

But instead of getting angry at them, we can educate them. And there are always going to be bad guys, whether they are NT or not. But I don't want to see it as "us against them". Like I said, I know a lot of NTs. Most of them are pretty good people.

I have nothing against them, so long as they don't do something stupid to me out of being irrational and they don't interfere with my life when I don't want them to. I already know that there's no medicine for ignorance, so I won't try it on those who won't see it. But for those who try to sympathize, perhaps they're worth educating about being an Aspie.

It's strange that Einstein's apparent ASD is rarely mentioned, for many cite it as part of the reason he was able to conceptualise such a novel theory, that and having a genius level IQ of course.
