I have really thick hair and I'm always rubbing it, all the time. It's so soothing to me, but my hair always looks like bed head and people won't leave me alone about it. It gets very greasy by day's end, too.
I really wish I could overcome this stim.

I also do it, except I run my fingers through it and it doesn't really get messy. It's also somewhat curly, so that might help.

I like running my hand along my dog's thick back hair, but I wouldn't go so far to call it a stim in my case.

I used to do that more often and I had the same problem. I don't know why I don't do it that often anymore.

I mess with my hair quite a bit. I am concerned about if it would make me go bald one day (although i have no signs of balding and I am 20 years old).

I think this is why my hair is getting thin on top- from tugging on it and rubbing at the roots of the hairs. Bah.

I know a NT girl who does this. At least it sounds eerily similar to what she does.

Since you are a guy - is your hair long or short?

If long, have you tried a ponytail? You would have to make an effort to try to remember the reason why you wear a ponytail whenever you touch your hair though. That's tough, but it's possible.

If you hair is short, I'd go with what another members already said. Gel. If you're hands get all sticky, you are at least sure to notice that you are currently messing up your hair.

Have you thought of an alternative method that is similarly soothing and claiming as rubbing your hair at the same time? Do you have other stims/habits that have about the same effect as that one?

Alternatively, if you don't mind that your hair looks like 'just out of bed' yourself you could find a style/haircut that just looks messy naturally. Then, you can always say it's intentional if other people plan to get their knickers in a twist about how your hair looks like.

I shake my foot a lot, that would be my stim.

I do if my hair is not tied back.

If I watch tv, read, or otherwise concentrate on something, I do it subconciously.
