I have a fear of people. Anyone else have a fear of people, and is it possibly an AS thing? The only reason I'm scared of people is because they don't understand me. Being around people I don't know just makes me nervous.

I have a rather extreme fear of bullies. It's gotten to the point where I'll try my best to hide from them despite where I am and sometimes I'll even start to hyperventilate. Otherwise, I love being around people and crave attention!

I'm scared of people but I try to ignore the fear. However, I'm pretty hyper when I'm with people because, I guess the fear energy gets channeled into my talking energy.

My family didn't realize how miserable we were when people were around until we moved into a secluded woodsy spot. Now we're so happy to be outside and just enjoying nature.

Yes, I'm scared of people, too, especially people around my age. Though I think it's more due to anxiety and bad experiences than AS.

Yes. In another thread that asked about phobias I said I didn't fear anything, but truly, people scare me. I could rationalize it; other people are the only creatures on this planet that can totally screw my life over. But really, I think I fear rejection, being mocked and bullied, and being misunderstood. All the things I've experienced in the past.

I also have stage fright. The last thing I want is an angry mob chasing me with torches and pitchforks. :P But seriously, I freeze up if I think I'm getting expectant attention from lots of people.

I'm very reserved in person and tend to avoid other people when I can. I definitely have some social anxiety.

I fear and loathe social situations. When I was younger, I used to get anxiety/panic attacks when put in larger groups. Pretty much beat that, but I'm still uncomfortable around large groups (like the recent Xmas job parties).

Ana - Berserker has diagnosed aspergers.
The fear of people probably comes from feelings of inadequacy in social situations. It is a very natural response (in my mind). If you feel people don't understand or don't accept you - or if you struggle to cope with social interaction, the development of a fear response seems reasonable.

I have a fear of people. It is not a fear that cames out of nowhere - there has to be a reason for it. So social anxiety may be the outcome, but the core issue is aspergers.

My son was diagnosed with severe social phobia and depression - but having these diagnoses did little to help and promote understanding. His core issue of aspergers wasn't diagnosed till later.

So am I. But sometimes I wonder if I have it, because I don't know what it is really and I don't think anyone does!

I'm nervous around people, but that's because of generalised anxiety and a history of not doing well in social situations.
I'm terrified of teenage girls.

People are my main sensory issue; they cause me to panic and melt for reasons unknown. Since they make me feel like this, of course I'm going to be scared of them; it's not social anxiety for the simple reason that I don't care how I appear to them (I used to care for my appearance so I didn't stand out and draw excess bullying).

I can rationalize it away:

I cannot read people
I'm disconnected from them (people fear the unknown)
I have no memories that people I don't know won't harm me
I've been bullied a lot by my "peers"
et cetera

They all could add up to be the correct reason, or there could be no reason at all.
