Just wondering who sucked their fingers or their thumb(s) when they were kids. And how long, if you're willing to reveal.

Me, I sucked my thumb on and off until I was 13. I only stopped because my brother threatened to break my arm. Nice bro, huh?

i did...i'm not ashamed to admit it. i know i was older than most when i stopped...probably before i hit my teens though. (can't really recall exactly how old i was.) i know i didn't do it in public, and only infront of my immediate family. i think the reason i stopped (what i remember being the reason anyways) is that my dentist threatened my with the orthodontist and braces (i had horrible buck teeth because of the thumb sucking...) so i cut back almost completely. luckily, my teeth straightened out, and people even ask me if i did wear braces because they are so straight...

and sometimes, even now, when i get extremely stressed or depressed, i revert to the thumb sucking...(did i just admit that to how many people? omg....lol!)

I don't and never sucked my fingers. I do and have always put my fingers in my mouth though. No sucking. They're just in there.

I suck my thumbs and will always.

It's very soothing and there's no alternative so why quit?

I sucked my fingers from the womb(I can only assume) or at least from birth until now, which is 16 years. I'll never stop.

Oh, the thumbsucker's thumb
may look wrinkled and wet
and withered and white as the snow
but the taste of a thumb
is the sweetest taste yet
as only we thumbsuckers know

I sucked my thumb till I was 8. Then I had to get an orthodontic palette expander which was this horrible plastic thing permanantly affixed to the roof of my mouth that you turned with a key every day. I cried for weeks because "my thumb didn't fit in its home." It was horrible. Now though, I'm glad that I don't suck my thumb any more. I'm 100% certain I still would if it hadn't been for orthodontics. My parents and friends' parents tried to reason me out of thumb-sucking by using the peer-ridicule rationale "but what do the kids at school think when you suck your thumb? You don't want to be a teenage thumb sucker do you?"

My answer was, more or less: I don't know what they think, and I don't care, now or in the future.

Apparently in kindergarten the kids were teasing me one day for sucking my thumb and the teacher explained to my mom when she picked me up that if i seemed upset, that's why. My mom asked if the kids had been teasing me, and I said "no." I actually wasn't even aware of it! Even back then, I just did what i wanted and was sometimes completely ignorant of what other people thought. I didn't even understand was embarrassment was until puberty, when i first felt it.

sometimes, rarely, when i'm really really upset and bawling, i wish i could still suck my thumb for comfort, but i try and it doesn't feel right anymore. My teeth hurt it, and it doesn't fit. Now I have a plastic mouthguard to stop my from grinding my teeth at night and that fills my mouth in a satisfying way and comforts me to go to sleep.

I didn't as a kid that I know of. I tried to get my kids to do it when they were infants, but they weren't that interested in it. Maybe for a minute.

I bite on the side of my index fingers (one at a time), but not enough to leave scars/callouses or anything permanent.

Two middle fingers. (Do a sign language "I love you", lift the two middle fingers straight out, then shove them in your mouth.) I think I was six or seven before my parents were able to get me to stop doing it.

I sucked mine up until age 6, when my parents used the ridicule tactic ooohprettycolors alluded to.

I sucked the index finger on my right hand, in all sorts of situations, for years. I don't remember precisely how old I was when I stopped; it was right before I started Grade 8, because that was when I got braces and a metal expander put in, and there was no room for the finger. I freaked out for several weeks, before finding another stim I could use. My parents had tried everything up until that point; gloves, tape, slathering my hand in tabasco sauce (which I still won't eat), even an appliance from the dentist specifically designed to stop finger sucking. But nothing ever got me to stop. I haven't done it badly since the braces came off when I was sixteen or seventeen, but if I'm really stressed or thinking, I'll sometimes start sucking on one of my fingers even now.

I sucked my thumb a lot until I was 8. I haven't completely stopped, although these days I'm more likely to chew on my fingers.

I've never actually sucked my thumb. Even when I was an infant I didn't. Putting things inside my mouth used to repulse me and even eating was a challenge in my younger years. I still ended up with braces regardless.
