repeating something simply because you like the way it sounds?
I do this a lot: I'll hear (or read) a word or a phrase which might sound interesting or funny for some reason, and I'll end up repeating it out loud (usually more than once) that same day. And, I'll still occasionally repeat it out loud days later (or sometimes weeks later). Of course, I do this when I'm alone somewhere. Rarely in front of other people.

Whether or not this is an involuntary thing, I'm not sure. All I know is that the word or phrase will pop into my mind, and I'll end up saying it out loud. And, I realize that I repeat it because I like the way it sounds.

I do, however, have regular echolalia. So I'm just wondering if what I mentioned above would also be considered echolalia. Or is it just a peculiar non-AS trait that I happen to have?

It's present in autism and other things, such as Tourette's. If you feel a strong urge to do it, I'd think it was more of a tic and related to Tourette's. With me it can be a word, group of words, or sounds....

And perhaps related. . .

I will be driving the intwrstate, see a sign and just say it, like

"I Seventeen twelve miles." aloud.

I do this too.

Almost exactly. But I'm in a different part of AZ than you, so it's slightly different for me...

Repeating Echoing topic

This tendency, along with the stims, are what people notice first and this is what sets up the difference. Then comes the distancing and complete disregard. At my age people do not lecture me about it, or chide me as they did when I was younger. Maybe they think it will go away?

My son is requesting the computer. I will be back. :)

I am back, many hours later. I think it has been four hours. My son and I had a late supper at midnight. My daughter is at a friend's for the night, and my son is off work this evening.

It is wonderful how my children do not notice my differences, even if they are NT. I am just Mother. I can be myself at home, echolalia and stims.

I am glad the younger people on this topic are not experiencing the same negative attention that I have encountered.

Is that what its called? well i'll be. I have been able to mimic voices, animals, cartoon characters and singing styles since i was a small kid, just to see if i could do it. I recorded a cd last fall and my producer was amazed at how well i could remember the versing when i put in backing vocals. I just have to hear a song a few times to get it. Maybe thats why i catch myself repeating things back to myself after i finish talking to someone. Its like a compulsion.

I do it too. I repeat what others say, but I do it unconsciously, I only realize when I've done it already. I think people think I just express my agreement with whatever the other person said.
But yeah, certain sounds and words are stuck with me when they sound or look interesting.

I do that. I read sign out loud whenever I'm in the car. One of my ex's friends is Aspergian, and he and I would make a game out of reading the signs as though we were having a conversation using the words on the signs.
