I know that I am. I've been hearing about them, since last January. I know that they make people with autism out to be severely handicapped.

Well, Autism Speaks, I walk bacause it's a proficient way for me to get from one place to another.

In my lab coat. With fishnet stockings and sexy heels. With that rythymic Aspie sway. To my laboratory. Where I'm the chemist.

Yeah, Autism Speaks, you could conceivably walk off the face of the planet. It's a steep fall off the edge of the flat earth, so I'm told.
Just a suggestion.

I'm going to pet my cat, Tesla now. I like him. Better than I like you, A.S.org. Keep walking! It's good aerobic exercise too, NT.

I didn't know what Autism Speaks was until someone submitted that YouTube video. There are some people around the world who need it desperately and one of those people could have been me - but not now! I personally think it's a very good idea, although if you hear it over and over again then I guess it could become a bit boring.

And they make _Pie_ post boring videos that I don't watch, like this one.

The most important thing I see about that video is that nobody in there says "I walk because *I* have autism" To me, it seems very patronizing. I ran in the "Race for the Cure" with my mother who had breast cancer, along with many other women and relatives supporting them. The big contract here is that women with breast cancer have an active voice in the Susan B Komen foundation that runs Race for the Cure...not so with Autism Speaks!

quote some stuff just incase people see the video wrong,

Quote:
autistics are abused in atrocious ways all in the name of cure. The woman who wrote this rap has a son that head bangs so much it has become life threatening. he has indeed been spat at, laughed at, abandoned by family, violated...
she longs for him to have the help he needs, AND be accepted. but i dont see how this video in any way suggests that he shouldnt have that help. or that anyone is a bad parent for trying to do so.

I cracked up halfway through _Pie_'s vid.

I imagined them saying 'my mother my sister my brother my son my father my cousin YO MAMA'

Sick and tired topic

I watched both videos. The You Tube one produced by Phil Commander was the more illuminating. What logitechdog was saying about the woman who wrote this song was very poignant: if there is a way to manage the more debilitating symptoms of people living on the Autism spectrum without negating all the positive and creative ones, I am all for this. But until that happens, curing is just a chemical straitjacket or snake oil lubrication that assuages the parents' and caregivers' guilt.

At least Autism Speaks promotes Floortime, which is a 100% dimplomatic approach to getting autistic kids engaged with them, on the kid's terms.

Okay, I'm going to use a stereotype of men to make my point, sorry guys. Here goes

When someone has a lot to say and, just once, in the information given, the phrase "naked lady" is mentioned, that's all a guy will hear.

That's been my experience with parents. Their kids aren't one dimensional but if the word "cure" is mentioned, it's like a stim that takes hold on them and blocks out everything else.

Autism Speaks shows the most severe cases to scare everyone into thinking that those cases are common and typcial. Fear sells.

Why can't they balance that stuff with showing all the cool potential in spectrum people and use postive messages to raise money?
