How should I define stimming for my NT friend?

I stim sometimes, and I want her to know what it means, but I don't know how to say it.

She's really accepting, and wants to know more about it. If possible, could you give me some links to a good website or a name of a good book for her too?

Ive always known it to be something that I do to releave myself of a sometimes unknown discomfort, almost as an impulse per se.. Yea, kind of hard for me to explain, never bothered to look for the exact definition myself. And Im bad at explaining things in the first place lol sorry..

Seeing as how everyone stims, not really an autistic trait.

It's also controllable most of the time.

I see stimming the feeling a cat gets when they are petted, or a baby when they are rocked. It gives me the same peace as when upon the ocean in a good ship, or sitting on the dryer in the laundry room.

stimming soothes me, no matter how fast I do it.

I viewe it the same way! And it ISN'T uncontrollable. If it was, it would be a tic or seizure.

You could compare it to twirling hair or fidgeting with a pen, for example.

with me stimming starts when I need the calming, and doesn't end until I am calm again. If I stop or control it, it is because I have learned to do so in order to be 'acceptable' in what ever situation I find myself or it is a safety issue, like driving in heavy traffic or fog/snow/ice where I have to be in control of my situation. I also have learned to control it when I become aware of myself stimming and staring and I mechanically physically turn myself so I am not staring in someones general direction and (inward sigh) having to stop the soothing stim in order to appear 'more normal.'

sometimes I do it just to reassure others that I AM aware of it and I CAN be in control of it, and when I would much rather derive the benefit I get from the stare and stim its self.
