I have received my appointments the first one is in late October. On that day I will have to take an IQ test which leaves me a bit nervous. It's been years since I actually had to use my brain for anything. My job basically requires that I know how to cut vegetables and cook eggs properly. So I decided that I should start using it my taking on-line IQ tests. The only one that didn't require a payment to get the results scored me at 46!! Whatever ego I have is hurt.

I know that I have most of the traits for Asperger's. The other day I noticed in a book one of them was being frightened by a commercial. I was surprized to see that. When I was a child there was one for beer that frightened me to the extent that I ran out of the room every time it was televised.

So I would like to pass the IQ test with flying colors so that I can have an explanation as to why I feel so different that other people, and why I identify so much with Asperger's.

Should I be concerned about feeling basically brain dead? Am I going in the right direction with my actions? I also have been playing Brain Academy on WII.

Thank you everyone.

There's a lot more to it than an IQ test. You can't study for an IQ test in the first place. I wouldn't worry too much about online tests which are hardly reliable.

irene,
there are a lot of things that affect IQ score, getting a low score when it's obvious are not that low, usually means something other than intelligence has got in the way-this could be anything from learning disabilities or difficulties,to not having had enough drink or food-they will notice are not low IQ-if it does turn out to be very low.

IQ is a lot more complicated than people realize. Most IQ test are speed oriented. There is a lot more to IQ than how fast you can answer a question. For example there are IQ tests that don’t have a time limit. If you haven’t fully used your cognitive abilities for a while you can study for an IQ test and it will increase your score as far as the limits of your capacity. Kind of like muscle building, but we are all limited by our genetics in the end. Very few of us can become bodybuilding champions without taking steroids. Unfortunately there is no hormone for mind building.

I think I would try another test: at 46 I don't think you could even read or write! My daughter as Asperger, but also had her short term memory affected by been hit by a car drunk driver car at age 6. She has a very high IQ but very low if it is a normal testing as she also has dyslexia on top of her short term memory problem: if the question is too long she will forget the beginning of the question and need extra time to re-read it. I would not worry about on line IQ test has you may also have other things that will interfere with the test like dehydratation, lack of sleep, dyslexia, hypoglicemia and a lot of other medical conditions and factors can affect concentration and therefore the results of an IQ test. A good therapist testing you will notice what part of the test you have difficulty with and should adjust the test to get you tested properly. My grand-daughter is 14 in advance maths classes A+ all the time but cannot add 3+5 nor 6-1 without using a calculator. So much for regular IQ tests.

Anyway high IQ is not a solution for anything as like my daughter and grand-daughter I have a very high IQ but I am retarted way beyond making any sense in certain other areas of my life like dealing with other people especially NT.

Well, as others have said, I wouldn't worry about that crazy score. IQ test results shouldn't influence your AS diagnosis anyway. Possibly the only thing they might look for with an IQ is a large variation between different abilities, as that can indicate learning disabilities which may be comorbid with AS.

What was most interesting about the IQ test the psychologist did with my son was not the overall score, which was high but not as high as we would have expected, but how the components broke out. Some components had scores in the brilliant range; other components were scoring well below average. And this is the crux with AS, it's a totally different brain formation, and you cannot look at a summary score and understand anything. It was those dramatic ups and downs in the components that most convinced the psychologist that my son was on the spectrum.

Different IQ tests try to sort it all out with different methods, and some focus on select components which may or may not be to your advantage. Testing a variety of components will give you the most useful information.

And it isn't a test you ace or fail, if done properly. Although that is the $999 question: will it be done properly?

IQ tests aren't very much like the ones online, anyway. I scored higher on the real-life test.

I was nervous about taking IQ tests as well. I have LD's especially where numbers are concerned but I actually ended up doing better on the Mathematical and Spatial parts of the test than the Language/comp part.........Strange. It was the spatial part of the test that really put my score up...I basically did not miss any of them.

Just by looking at your post it's obvious you do not have a 46 IQ.
In real life the tests are broken down in a different way. Online tests are inaccurate because they often ask outdated questions and they are highly time-dependent. And they don't show variability. In some areas I seemed ret*d and in others I was shockingly advanced, so I wouldn't be surprised if you are the same way and the online test just averaged out to a score that was unrealistically low.

Thank you all for your answers. It is really fabulous that I am able to communicate with the people who actually understand what I am saying. After reading the replies I feel fairly confident that I will do well.

I found that some of those tests were actually enjoyable. Before I had this job working at a travelling circus in the cookhouse I worked in an office doing a job that required ALOT of thinking-quite a bit of math. I really liked it but felt as though I needed a change. Now I miss doing that kind of thing. My job does not require that much thinking, and I hate feeling brain dead.

With tonnes of things going on in our lives it can leave us feeling brain dead. Whatever the score may happen to be, you know deep down you have the brains even though it may not feel like it at times :)

Be prepared to get huge gaps between your highest and lowest subscores! Some autistic people literally score in the genius range on some things, and the mental-retardation range in others. Most gaps aren't that extreme, but stuff along the lines of 80/120 is pretty common, especially if you've got a learning disability stuck in there too. I only have a 26-point gap (verbal/working-memory, with verbal being the higher score).

oh my gah! 8O

funny though, that explains a lot.. now i know why i could never beat this girl at a certain game, and why i couldnt improve in certain areas :x thats freaky though.. to be a genius in one realm and a ret*d in another  thats exactly how i am

Usually the solution is that you use the "genius" skills to cover up for the weak areas. Plus you get a job in the area where your strengths are, the more specialized the better.

Should warn you, by the way, that using "ret*d" as a noun is considered offensive, though "mental retardation" is still a valid diagnostic label. Yeah, it's weird, but trust me, people with MR get enough crap from the world without it being used as an insult.
