Last Wednesday five days after getting my Probationary Licence I was driving my stepdad John to his Australian citizenship ceremony and then we went out to dinner about a half hour drive away. It all went totally cool except for the fact anytime anyone honked their horm "I kept saying stop honking at me you w*kers I am not doing anything" John was saying "they're not honking at you love. I thought they were honking at me because they were pissed off with a P plate driver which people can be. I had P plate paranoia!! also being an aspie I was nervous because it was different and things had changed I no longer had L plates on the car and have P plates instead. In time I will get over it I know I am a good driver.

People honk for all sorts of reasons. My calm way of thinking is "Somebodys horn works :)"

Some people are just obnoxious honkers, it depends on where you are. In india people honk all the time because most cars don't have rear-view mirrors, so anyone who wants to pass honks their horn to let the car they're passing :) I'd imagine that would be super annoying if I were driving

On the other hand, I don't know how it is in australia but here in the US, in my state, it is actually illegal to honk your horn except in very specific circumstances (such as to avoid a collision) and police can ticket you with fines for honking otherwise. Now that's a law I don't mind so much :)

Thats interesting about it being illegal in certain circumstances i am not too sure about here I know people honk for a lot of different reasons like to say hi to their mates, because they are annoyed at something, to alert others of danger etc

Ah! that's why they do that. I did wonder about that. I can see why they honk on the narrow winding roads but when I was in Goa they were all honking on major wide open streets too and I remember thinking "this is dangerous, when there really is an imminent collision I will just ignore the honking because it is all just noise now!"

In general I like the P plates though as it gives other drivers a chance to know there is an inexperienced solo driver (regardless of age) at the wheel. The thing I dont like about it is the stereotyping that goes on that P platers are all hoons.

P platers are not allowed to drive anything more powerful than a V6, which is understandable IMO.
It's not unusual of cops pulling over P platers just because thier car looks suped up or performance modded.
I'm lucky I havent been pulled over because my car looks more powerful, but its just the extra's that came with the car brand new that make it look like the more expensive, higher performance model (I have a Lancer ES that looks like a VRX)
I don't get honked at when driving along, but I do sometimes get honked at for being a little too indecisive at intersections

Yeah the high powered thing doesnt bother me as I wouldnt want to be driving a V8 I am a 28 year old woman. It was cool they weren't honking at me. I think ti si funny in NSw how you have to have your Ps on the outside of the car most people put them on the inside in Victoria. I do one on the front windscreen inside the top lefthand carner and one magnetic one on the back but that is a personal choice. Are you on P1 or P2? I went straight onto P2 as in Victoria if you are 21+ you go onto a three year green P2 stage.
