People may remember me posting a while back about my going out on the town with my friends. It was a major breakthrough for me.

I'm now at university, and I've made loads more breakthroughs, leaving Asperger's inhibitions behind me!
- I've become a social drinker. I've not drunk at all in four or five years, but I'm getting back into it now and while I have no intention of getting drunk, it makes you so much more easily accepted with others.
- I spent an evening hanging with my friends in a sports bar. A SPORTS BAR! I hate sports! But I was still there. Crossing a new frontier.
- I've made friends with loads of people, not just by accident, but proactively. All of my roommates (I'm in another city with nobody I know at all local) I introduced myself to them rather than vice versa and I already feel like I've lived with them forever.
- Just now I actually went up to people I've scarcely met before and said hello and chatted to them for a bit. Proactivity, people!
- Yesterday I went knocking around some of the other flats in my building to just say hello to the people that lived there.

I've also not freaked out about my change in routine yet once. I think it's because I've not solidified a routine yet to be messed up, but still.

These are great times, people :D

Congratulations! Wow, you are taking lots of exciting and great steps lately! I'm away from home at a conference for a few days and this is very difficult for me. I'm out of routine, rooming with someone that I don't really know very well and trying not to freak out. I hate feeling as if I have to wear my normal suit 24/7 which I never do. My roomie is gone and I'm in a sleep number bed(...omg are these things better than sex, or what?) watching telly and trying to defrag a little before I go in search of food. It's hard to get out of your comfort zone and can be extremely uncomfortable. So, I'm very impressed with you!

Keep up the good work and use your evil powers for good!

Yeah I'm living with six people I'd never met 8O

I think the trick with a lot of these things is attitude. So many of us have misgivings about doing something, and if you expect to hate it, chances are you'll hate it. So I just went in with a positive attitude - e.g. I couldn't wait to see who I was living with - and it's worked out better in all of these respects (though I expect it would have either way for most of it).

I find that attitude helps quite a bit with new situations. I try not to obsess about all the things that could go wrong, but sometimes, I just can't help it. Sucks. But I try to be positive and not dwell on stuff. It's usually helpful.

I don't think that I could live with 6 other people. Sometimes living with my husband is one person too many, so I am very proud of you. We all know all difficult it can be to step out of your comfort zone!

yeh 19 and college is a good age...i will give one piece of advice, take or leave it.
always give yourself a time out or a place to go to decompress....alone daily.

I find AS people need to have a rest to help them get through so much NT interaction ( talking shite)

i went to college and when i was 19 i drank and chatted with the best but i was constantly tired.
i never decompressed but looking back i needed to.

enjoy.

Decompress? This isn't work for me, man. I have as much alone time as I need, and in fact most times I've been alone I've found it boring and wanted to be with my mates instead.

Yeah, I was only diagnosed myself two or three years ago.

Also, another breakthrough last night - they gave me this alcoholic drink that I didn't like, but I still finished drinking it anyway.

I finished something I didn't even like 8O

listen dude take this any way you want, or not at all.
i've been there and done that.

there has been in my past a naieve vulnerability and a desire to please others.
it coulkd be that your fitting in, having a great time and feeling "good"
and if this is genuinely the case then i am pleased for you.

but reading your last post made me consider the possibilty that yoru new friends may be making you drink a drink that they tehmselves wouldnt drink....it may be a subtle form of bullying or just college antics.
just looking out for you dude.
dont feel a need to drink somethign that no one else is drinking just to fit in.
there may be a reason that your the only one drinking it.

Congrats, thats great. What did it for me was joining a group of girls when I was in 10th grade (nothing to do with the school I was at) and they were nice and accepting.. and I also think the overnight camp that I went on at 15 helped.. but I can't tell you how much at first was absolute HELL!! Being away from my bed, my routine, but that in the end had a huge impact on my social skills improving... I liked college too, one of the best times in my life.

Yeah, that really wasn't the situation whatsoever. The guy who handed it to me was drinking it as well.
