The more I read about Asperger's the more likely it seems to me that this is what I suffer from. But a doctor I've spoken to told me that he thinks ADD is my main problem, and told me I don't seem to meet the criteria for Aspergers, but hadn't left me terribly convinced.

I've had a traumatic childhood, but there's absolutely no doubt I was born with these symptoms, and my childhood made it much worse. I've been thought to be a genius in my childhood, but with significant social impairment. I've been picked on alot throughout my childhood, and was never able to fit in with the rest of the people, or keep friends for very long, and I never cared either. It's like I lived my life sleepwalking.

I still feel like I'm sleep walking, and can't seem to get out of my head. I've managed to complete high school, and get to the best university in the country without studying much at all, but I started failing at this stage, because I couldn't control my mind. All the stress got to me, and I became extremely confused, as if I just woke up with no clue to where I am or how I got there.

I went to see a psychiatrist for the first time in my life, and all they could diagnose me was with depression. I seem to have little to no reaction, even to high doses of anti-depressants.

That's all I have in mind about my condition. I ask you to help me out if you have any useful information on the topic. Do I sound like I have some form of high-functioning autism? Or is it just plain ADD? Do you have any questions that might help you understand this better? Please let me know. I only want to understand myself better.

Try this:

Aspie Quiz

I've been diagnosed with ADHAD as an adult, but Aspergers fits much better. Doctors aren't always so hot at diagnosing adults.

Hey. Thanks for your info.
Your Aspie score: 181 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 20 of 200
You are very likely an Aspie

How does this compare?

About typical for an Aspie. Don't know what the false-positive rate of that test is, though.

ADHD, Aspergers and some other neurological differences share many traits. That's what makes diagnosis so um....interesting. :) ADD can cause or contribute to some social difficulties. I've been diagnosed with ADHD and also bipolar disorder. Neither of these really fit. It's been very helpful to me to read forums for folks with ADHD, bipolar, and now WP to see the many ways the traits can manifest. Here it's like reading my life story in many respects, while I have many differences with the other forums. I don't know your gender, but it's hard for some docs to diagnose adults with "childhood" disorders, especially women because of the differences in manifestation. If you think the doctor is wrong, get another doctor. Or, deal with difficulties without necessarily worrying about a diagnosis. Don't forget to celebrate the positives of aspiedom while you're at it.
