Black Manta, nemisis of Aquaman:

"A second origin was given in #8 of the 2003 Aquaman series. In this origin, the boy who would become Black Manta was an orphan who has autism and was placed in Arkham Asylum. He felt comfortable in freezing cold water, while cotton sheets were excruciatingly painful. Because the attendants at Arkham didn't know how to deal with autism, they would end up restraining him to the bed as he struggled and screamed whenever they tried putting him there. The boy was also fascinated when he saw Aquaman on television.

The boy would end up being subjected to experimental treatments. One treatment seemed to clear the boy's head, but left him violent as a result; he killed the scientist who had administered the treatment and escaped from Arkham."

I disagree with some of the implication though, such as "autism is cureable", that it promotes..... "One treatment seemed to clear the boy's head"..... But depending on how you wanna take that, it could be more of a story about how he was wronged and how he took his frustration in the wrong direction.....
Of coarse I had read somewhere else that they didn't totally "cure" him, but basically brought him from being a low functioning autistic to a high functioning autistic... But I strongly disagree with how they portray him in this article like "oh he was a problem child because he had tantrums that NTs couldn't deal with" and he had an "afflicated brain" that Healing Hands reversed, making him "normal".......
Yeah a lot of damage has been done here to autistics' reputation.... But what would you expect though?.... I think they could revise it though, and make him a semi-sympathetic villain, who was wronged, and just went about taking his frustration out in the wrong way..... Maybe even introduce an aspie super hero to bring him down.

This is what the article says:

"The fearsome Black Manta and Aquaman battled repeatedly over the next several years. During one of these clashes, it was revealed that Black Manta was actually an African American (which is why he called himself Black Manta), whose stated objective at one point was for black people to be dominant in the ocean after having been oppressed for so long on dry land (though this goal was revealed to be a ruse he used to trick Cal Durham into following him, and this objective was not at all evident in either his earlier or later appearances). During most of his appearances, his main goals were defeating Aquaman and gaining power for himself through the conquest of Atlantis. Finally, Manta kills Arthur Curry, Jr., Aquaman's son, which left Aquaman obsessed with revenge."

But his character is somewhat of a sympathetic heel.... I mean when you look at his back ground, he was kidnapped, raped, and forced to work on a ship as a boy.... He grew up a poor black aspie orphan. He was mis-treated by the state, put in asylum and abused..... Dealt with a ton of discrimination obviously, he was autistic and black, and poor. So he just took his frustration in the wrong direction. He let his problems get the better of him..... That's how I'd see it, I mean if I were to do a aquaman movie (which would suck) and Black Manta was in it, that's somewhat how he should probably be portrayed.
