A 70 IQ autistic named Joshua Fry was allowed to join the U. S. Marines , then dishonorably discharged (The recruiter picked him up at his group home) .

Seems to me the dishonorable discharge should be for the recruiter.

when i worked for an army recruiter we used to take high school kids out to lunch at hooters and get them drunk at strip clubs. the marine recruiters that he hung out with got in trouble for paying girls as young as 13 to sleep with potential recruits at parties they would throw.

a lot of the best recruiters are crappy people.

The guy wasn't DDed because he was autistic. He was DDed because he "forgot" to tell the recruiter he "once had psychiatric treatment for an addiction to child pornography" and after training "he tried to run away and was found to have child pornography on his laptops and cellphones."

It's not the autism that's the problem; it's the child pornography.

I don't see the point of the "fraudulent enlistment" charge, though. The child porn thing happened after he enlisted. and the original incident wasn't a criminal charge but a mental-health treatment (presumably outpatient). He wasn't going to be working with children. He told them about his autism and they didn't have a problem with that. There wasn't any fraud here, or anyway none that I can see.

It's not unusual for autistic people to enter the military and even do well there. I know one Aspie ex-Marine who did just fine.

...While I myself haven't read the whole stories as yet , I'll agree that my headline sort of played up the " interest to ' us '/' victim ' " angle - However , I do tend to think that the recruiter should have know , I think you may be a little caught up in trying to " prove " that AS can do well in the miltary - Which I'll admit is true . - and blaming him ( The AS-er . ) too much !

Dude had kiddie porn. He should've been discharged. I just don't see that autism has anything to do with it. The same thing could've happened to an NT.

Anybody sick and tired of people blaming illegal things on autism?

I don't disagree with the discharge, it was appropriate.

what I disagree with is that the recruiter kept information secret that should appropriately have gone into the dude's personnel file under health history. I have no doubt autistics function just fine in the military, but it's something (as far as I'm concerned) that should be in the medical file of an organization that will be responsible for meting out discipline as well as health care.

perhaps the recruiter was trying to make his quota. otherwise why hide the recruit's autism? and why ignore the fact that grandma was conservator when he illegally signed Joshua up?

...FWIW , having read the whole thing ( 2B absolutely honest , absolutely read one of the two ABC articles and MOSTLY read the other - This machine is INCREDIBLY bucking whenever you try to read things , and , poor as I am , I went to an Internet cafe & spent $10 on computer time partly so I could read this and could comment tonite...........) , yes , it DOES say that the recruiter , FIRST UP , told him to lie on the form , I guess about his status and his grandma being his partial conservator...And , it says he didn't do the CP until after , having been in the Marines for a longish time & having asked to get out , he was still kept in .
Was it just a video of his underage old girlfriend , say ?????????
The " CP " term gets applied to a lot of things these days , and maybe the Marines saw that as a way of getting rid of him w-out adnmitting that their guy did wrong...........

I don't think they were blaming what he did on his autism. They didn't say that he had child pornography and didn't realize it was wrong because he was autistic. They said that he had child pornography, he said himself that he realized it was wrong and immoral and they just mentioned that he happened to have two conditions - autism and bi polar disorder.
I didn't see anyone writing a connection between what he's diagnosed with and what he did, or maybe I just miseed it.
