Why is it that Christmas seems to give people an excuse to stink up the place (it doesn't matter if its a hospital/doctor's office/school/office building/restaurant/etc...anywhere I go, basically) with whatever's handy? Anywhere it seems I go, I get bombarded with cheap cinnamon, pine, peppermint, and miscellaneous air freshener spray and potpourri and just the mixing of the smells...

It makes me want to hang around in the sub zero weather outside just to keep from throwing up.

Any sensory rants that you guys have for this time of year?

Music. Music gets very annoying and some people think they have to play it even more constantly than they usually do. The forced cheer of many Christmas songs really creeps me out, on top of it all.

The only Christmas songs I still like are http://www.purepwnage.com/shorts/christ ... orogh.html and "I heard the bells on Christmas day" simply because I never hear them all the time everytime I head out in public or turn on the radio.

Ahhhh yes, the music. Of course people turn heads when I sing my own words to the tunes such as:

Chipmunks Roasting on an open Fire
12 Pains of Christmas
Axle Rose is Coming to Town

as well as some of the non-conforming songs such as:
Christmas at Ground Zero

I would like them if they didn't play them so often, and sing them in ways that make it obvious they have no idea what the words mean, or else stopped thinking about them years ago. You just do NOT try to sing "Silent Night" in a seductive voice. It does not work. And it drives up the price of brain bleach, besides.

I know exactly what you mean, while some scents are barable, walking into a porrly planned grouping of scents is hell. Its like someone blended the right blend of pain and agony to make my hea spin. If its a single scent that is not too powerful, I dont mind it. Otherwise I hate it with a passion, and that is why I think spray deoderants should be internationally banned. However, regardless of how strong, I love the smell of fresh cooking, it makes me want to enjoy whatever is being cooked.

It's especially bad when you go to a college where every idiot guy there thinks he's sexy if he bathes in Axe.

Damned good thing the semester ended last week and the decorating started this week otherwise I can't imagine cinnamon + pine + peppermint + Axe.

Pick a random day that my local farmers market is open, it will be busier there than anywhere else in the world at any point in time, regardless of time of year. I still go there because of certain things I can't really get elsewhere.... even though I hate crowds of even 1/300 of the size.

Wow - I guess I'm lucky I'm in England. We don't get bombarded with smells for Christmas - at least, I've never experienced that in any place in England that I've lived.

I do hate the crowds though. I try to stay at home and not venture into the city centre this time of year unless I have to.

It's the music that gets to me, big time. I hate the music. It's everywhere. It's inescapable. I'm Jewish, and I start singing along with stuff I don't even believe in. Stuff I very vehemently don't believe in. I feel like I'm having another religion burned into my brain against my will. Plus, most of it is just total shlock. I don't mind a good rendition of Handel's Messiah, but if I hear another Bing Crosby Christmas song, I'm going to resign from the human race and start work on that space pod.

So, anyway, yesterday, I had this idea. At the place where I volunteer, it's been non-stop Christmas music for the past few weeks. So I asked one of the managers if I could bring in some klezmer music. I figured, as long as we're going to go with the fiction of all the fuss being made for "the holidays," a little something from another culture might be um, appropriate. Anyway, she said, "Yes! Please! Tomorrow!" So I brought in some Breslover chassidic stuff, and rocked out all afternoon. It was fun and quite amusing--everyone getting ready for Christmas to old Jewish melodies. I love irony.

Yeah, I have been avoiding the major shopping centres. Good thing all my gifts are from the same bookstore. :P
