Okay, we are all used to seeing the ads for the quack threatments and therapies marketed as "cures" for Autism, but advertising an institution here is a new precedent. It seems hypocritical to me (I realize that Alex didn't hand pick the ad) to have a forum to facilitate understading and support, and then show parents an ad for someone offering parents a chickenshit way out of dealing with their kid's difficulties. It's one thing if someone's kid is a danger to themself or others and they can't control it anymore, but there is no mention of that. If they were to tell the truth they would advertize something like : "Here's a new way for all you crappy parents with an ASD kind out there to remain in denial and neglect them. During their stay, they will be forced to act in ways that are unnatural and stressful that will give them issues for life, but at least they won't be your probem any more."

I ask that the administration please consider paying closer attention to what is being advertized.

I agree. I've seen ads for Asperger Sindrome, and one for "The Gow School", similar to your point. Ads are dangerous.

I don't see what's so bad about advertising a school where they also develop social skills. Or should we call all residential schools "Institutions"? We have a lot of residential schools here, because there's a lot of people who live far away from a normal school. Or private residential schools because they can have other opportunities. So what if it's focussed on schooling for autistics, that's what that Aspie school does, of which we have a member who attends and he LIKES it. So before you go shooting it down and calling it an institution, perhaps you could give your extreme prejudicial opinions a rest. You don't know jack s**t about the place this advertisement is about. And yet you're convinced it's some dark institute where they plan to bury autistics and never let them see the light of day. It's just a SCHOOL, do you remember those? But a school where they will learn social skills instead of metalwork they will probably never use. Where they live during the school year, like thousands of normal kids do, too. Where students are Aspies, or have some of the same inadequacies as you. I don't mind the advertisment at all.
I'm really really sick and tired of the prejudice a lot of people here have. It's like you have this mindset that everything is bad and evil and it should be removed. Hey, you know what it reminds me of? The dark ages. Your truth is the only one that is right, right? You know the problem? You guys analyse everything too much. Just forget about analysing, and get on with the living. Too much head, too little being.

It's advertising a school to help develop social and life skills. What is the problem with that? WrongPlanet is here to provide understanding and support, and that is exactly what the school is advertising.

I think ads like that should be for schools that we have researched and support... it shouldn't be something that John the Google Programmer picks because that company made the highest bid or whatever.

Or I dunno... maybe some kind of disclaimer saying that "Wrongplanet does not officially support the companies behind the following adverts"? would something like that help?

I wouldnt have minded going to a school just for aspies even if they did help with social skills, I think your reading to much into it.

I think we forget that there are some with AS or HFA who don't have the life or social skills most of us do here. AS is on a spectrum meaning that some are affected more severely and may need more help. As long as the school is one that prepares its students to eventually be out in the world and isn't an excuse to isolate kids from the outside, I think they're a great idea.

I've been in residential. It was not for AS but severe behavioral problems (the AS was actually suggested there- I buy it as they had me 24/7, it's likely to be accurate; before I heard they thought I had it I'd never heard of it). Anyway, having been through that, resbit, quasi-forster-care, and hospitilizations, the only places I've been to that I object to my treatment were run by incompetant and actually CRUEL people (one forster home run by a woman with anger management issues and control issues, and one "children's home" run by religious people who kind of brainwashed the kids and used corproral punishment for EVERYTHING, which I now know they lied about and said they used it sparingly). The places I've been were by and large filled with people who needed to be there, or out of their homes. Just because you personally would not want to be somewhere or go through something like being placed in residential does not mean that it is not a valid choice for parents. It IS an invalid choice for children to destroy their parents when help is available, or for parents to destroy their CHILDREN when help is available, and both can wind up happening.

Don't bash it 'till you've been there, man.

*shrug* I don't find it objectionable. I probably would have preferred something like that to regular school, which sucked for me even though I was "gifted."

Roll those both into one, and you've got where I grew up. She didn't succeed with the brainwashing though; except for one of us, we've all left religion behind. But I'd agree with you, it's not the perfect environment to grow up in.
