Counting posts around here seems like a past time.

Fine with me, i'm on board, as if i had a choice, i count everything, anyway.

What's the general perception on post-counts?
-is it cool to post alot
-are there some who pad their post count with inane drive
---who is the worse offender of the padding posting
---besides Neuroman, who offers the most consistent quality posts?

Whats a postser's personality like?
-Who is the biggest smart alex (j/k)
-who has the least tact
-who is the most considerate
-who is the most sensitive
-who is the least sensitive
- who posts the most thought into the fewest words
-who writes the longest posts
-who writes the lamest posts

Are there rules involved in posting (besides common respect)
-if some-one wrote 100 2-5 word posts in a day, do they get credit for all 100.
-can you recieve extra credit if you are quoted
- if you start a post that recieves 10 replies or more, can you get 10 free post counts.
etc...
etc...
etc...

Is there some way that we can establish a posting rules commitee, which will write up a set of rules governing posts and the post count?

I haven't been here long, but it seems that if i got credit per word i'd have 1000 by now. meanwhile others respond like this "that's cool" to every post on the board.

I am not trying to raise myself above others , its just cleaner to use yourself for an example (no hurt feelings) i think the competition would be fun and and it may lend a little more credibility and thought to posts.
Don't you hate it when you are keeping tabs on a post and you get it in your mailbox, the ol' topic reply notification. But when you get there it has been reduced to a bunch of "thats cool".

This is just an inception of an idea. I must be at the point right before REM, it just popped into my brain and i better get it out. And i'm sure its been thought of already, what hasn't?

i am sure that some geek that spends alot of time on this sight can write a pro0gram to keep track of the statistics.

Like i said, establish a panel to make up the rules, point systems, categories, just a general think tank expanding on a premise. They could have web cam meetings 3 times a week 2 hour each meeting for a month, or more.

You get + or - post points determined by many factors, some are already stated above and also bonus points can be worked in as well.
There seem to be a ton of forum moderators on this site and they love being here i can tell. who wants to volunteer to work a little harder?
because of course, their would have to be a governing body or grievance committee, so as not to show favoritism (this is a competition).

I was thinking about how you could also have a section, which praises the prior months winners for each category. (that way you don't have to give cash prizes)
Categories could include
Poster of the month (the over-all best poster in terms of quality, variety of topic, and interrest)
Rookie of the month (200 or fewer total post count)
Most topics of interest ( most topics recieving 5 or more different replies)
best single post of the month (self explanatory)
Most replied to poster (the person who has had the most different people take interrest and have replied to their total of posts)
etc...

Think about what the secondary effects would be:
At first it would be a headache of loop-holes, end-fighting, politicing, and whining.
but after the kinks are worked out i would suspect that you would have people (2893 member) show up more, due to better topic matter and competition. more click counts means higher charges to advertisers which means eventually cash prizes or less advertizers. i vote for less advertisers.

And so many other benefits, and haed aches (maybe to both) I mean, if your wondering how to generate more revenue in the least intrusive manner, this could be a solution. But it would have to be done right. I can help with the premise and would love to see it through to about the 90% mark, that's usually the length of my interrest in things.

remember, this is just a premise. There must be alot more to this to make it work. And since it is off the cuff i can only speak to my gut instincts. I can visualize artistic licence for the web site and a chance for wealth to the other end of this spectrum which should only include many minor headaches, generally at start up, and occasionally some major headaches.
my initial analysis is that the upside would far outweigh the down-side. Take a chance.

Feed back, any-one?

There are sites that give "points" (etc) on participation levels... But I don't really get that involved much... Plus I'm not sure how such would work with WrongPlanet... You should bring this up in the Bug & Ideas forum :)

Though I think you might win that Longest Post award thingy ;)

I think a lot of us count things. I do too, and am looking forward to post 1,000. To me it is a milestone. I have never been this social in my life!

Even Neuroman pads posts if you go by the strict definition of post padding. In terms of quality, there are too many to count. Personally I find Ghosthunter challenging, BeeBee, Vetivert, Pyraxis, Alex, Scoots, GalileoAce, Namiko, Magic, Serissa, msj82, ljbouchard and a host of others I will acknowledge if they remind me very encouraging and supportive. Sohpist and you challenge me intellectually on a regualr basis. NeantHumain and danlo have obvious ability to empathize in spite of their trollish exteriors, and both have superb intellectual skills and, unbeknownst to them until now, have taught me a lot about managing neurotypical interactions. ridgerider gave me the gift of tanka. You missed WooYayHoopla and DeepThought - they made great posts too.

You really can't say who is the most or least anything. I have my tactless days as well as my brilliant ones. People find me polite, but that is only because I don't do chat - I am not good at spontaneous interaction and usually make a lot of "tact"ical errors.

I don't think we'd want to start judging posters; I think expressing opinion (without personal attack) about individual posts is the best we'll do.

Quote:
-if some-one wrote 100 2-5 word posts in a day, do they get credit for all 100.
I think they should if they survived the boredom of doing that.
Quote:
-can you recieve extra credit if you are quoted
this would discriminate against the less articulate and more unique posters. It might also encourage a wierd form of trolling - posting something designed to get quotes.
Quote:
- if you start a post that recieves 10 replies or more, can you get 10 free post counts.
the articles work this way - they get scores and a count of comments is kept.

When I first came to this site I didn't submit long posts. It was great to see my designation change, but the real joy for me was noticing that I have stayed here as long as I have - longer than I have engaged in any other group activity. And I do the occasional "that's cool" type post because I don't have anything else to say but want the poster to know I was there and agreed or whatever.

I think the idea of identifying people who do better or worse at posting might be a little off-putting for people as to me this seems an informal community. However, I do like the idea of showcasing interesting threads or posts in a less random way. To some extent the community does that itself, as in your thread complimenting me. BTW, thanks for that. When someone compliments me I often get embarrassed enough to forget to do the socially appropriate thank yous.

(not counting as I head for post 1000  )

WARNING WARNING: SHORT LOW QUALITY POST AHEAD!! DANGER WILL ROBINSON!! !

<post>That's cool.<end post>

:P

Sure some people might not always write long detailed stimulating posts, but that isn't alway warranted. In other forums where people are playing characters, sometimes a one word response is all that is warranted. Also, when offering emotional support to someone else, sometimes only a few words are needed. Can't measure quality by number of words or by number of posts. You actually have to read them all, and probaly quite a few threads as well, to know how good they were.

Post count is just a measure of how unsocial you are anyways - the more you post the more you are in need of a life. ;) Just joking people .... no don't hang me....

Also, I tend to have periods where I will talk/chat/post/email a lot, mainly when I'm feeling down. Doing so helps keep my mood up. Am I the only one who does this?

I do this as well. For instance, a tragic incident occurred yesterday.. I came home and sat online reading and posting to keep my mind off it. It got me thinking of other things and feeling alot better then I had previously been. Usually in those moods I'm more likely to read then post, but if I have something to say, even if it is really small, I'll still share...
I think it would be kind of hard to judge based on quality vs quantity because of the differing expectations from topic to topic.

I post more when up or down, but especially when down.

It is really hard to say whose post I admire. There really is so many who have diffenent systles but each fits in....

Ohhhhh. And here I thought posting a lot was more social....
:(
Why would anyone hang you? Then you wouldn't have a life. (peeks at Larval's post count) Um, (looks at Larval's avatar), um.....
Never mind.

*disclaimer* Also just joking. (looks at own post count and avatar) Don't bother with the hanging....all you have to do is wait....

There is nothing wrong with the supportive, "that's cool" post. It was just an oversimplified example. And i assume a good way for some people to 'get their feet wet'. what i mean is that there are many people, i assume, who don't dive in with both feet. many people, and i again assume, like to test the waters at first with a toe, then their foot, and as they gain confidence, they would eventually dive right in.
and the idea of being judgemental about the 'thats cool' post was not my intent.

The first sentence implies judging others and rigid guidlines or a type of "form" posting. I had considered that it may be taken that way, thus the reason for my soliciting advice. I do have a problem, not knowing when i should be put off, thus i tend to think that everybody has the same lack of sensitivity.
I tend to live in Sponge Bob's world.

Even Neuroman pads posts if you go by the strict definition of post padding.
Quote:

Here's a good way to pad.
put each quote in a new post, just make 5 posts in a row.
it solves a multitude of problems as well. A couple examples would include; storter post sizes which would keep the attention better of the attention deficit types..

And it aids in avoiding the awkward overlap post. you know what i mean. when you are going back and forth with another member, post for post in dialogue. and because of the length and time required for the multiquote post, by the time you submit your gem is has already been rendered redundant since another, quicker on the draw has already beaten you to the quote. i find, they often do it better, which only complicates matters.

switcharoo the last.
The short and concise is neuroman
the longer wordy one is mine.

And i was shocked at your admonition of padding. i am certainly going to rethink my previous judgements about you.
J/K i also don't have a problem with the padding simple ones.
to each and so on...

i also just read my latest submission and it was intended as being more supportive than the ters manner in which it came out.

with out a doubt.

wheres the competition?

although i do view that to be one of my greates handicaps. being al to aware of how limiting of an effect that my wordiness creates.

Its me, so what, i am working on it.

and thanks for the compliment, was it meant that way? i'm blind you see, and i don't getit when people are are trying to politely disagree with me.

be rude with me, short, terse whatever, otherwise i won't get it.
and i won't get my feelings hurt if you do.

Lets have a pile on SB² post.

SB² has a problem in the following areas....

squared sign is hold down Alt whist pressin the #'s 0178

For this site at least, I think the difference between low post counts and high post counts are the people like me who never shut up. ;) It's almost a push of speech (though I'm not Bipolar). I've always gotta put in my 29 cents somehow, somewhere. I'm sure there's some minor epiphany or revelation in there...

Wouldn't it be simpler to go through the posts and subtract all the "That's cool" posts and see who adds up to what?

I'm gonna have to give this a think. Atm, my brain is on the verge of overload and I still have a huge psych test to study for tomorrow. 8O

Hey SB2, sorry I didn't answer till now, had a really hectic weekend and I haven't been around much except to make sure the haven was up and running ok.

My answer is unfortunately probably going to disappoint you.... I consider post count to be absolutely irrelevant and pay no attention to it whatsoever. So I wouldn't have much use for a system that tracked and rated users based on post count. It's not a reliable enough variable to judge people by. I come to know a person when they've written enough to have given me a feel for their personality and philosophy. Sometimes that happens after 10 posts, sometimes after 1000... it all depends how much thought is put into the posts and how often the other's sphere happens to cross my own (as in, posting in the same forums and threads).

I consider post count to be COMPLETELY irrelevant.

But I'm proud of my second place position.
