javabuz,
with NT,many users here wrongly use it to mean the opposite of autistic,it is short for 'neuro typical' and means 'those with atypical brains',the autism spectrum is included under this, but it also includes other atypical brain differences as well, think ADHD/ADD,the schizo* spectrum and bipolar are on there-amongst others.
here's some others will find on wrong planet:
Autistic =Most WPers use 'Autistic' to mean those with any form of autism, may think this is an obvious one but some only use 'Autistic' for those with classic autism [it gets confusing].
Autism ='Autism' is another one that may confuse, because it means different things to different members on WP.To some,it is only referring to classic autism,to some-it is including the whole spectrum, and to others-they only use it to refer to people with aspergers.
Some refuse to use the word 'autism' at all.
Autie ='Autie' is an unofficial term for those with classic autism.People with PDDNOS who are closest to classic autism may be referring to themselves as 'Autie' as well.
Aspie ='Aspie' is an unofficial term for those with aspergers syndrome.People with PDDNOS who are closest to AS may be referring to themselves as 'Aspie' as well.
Autist ='Autist' is along the same level as Autie and Aspie,it's just a shortened version of Autistic and sounds better to some.
The triad of impairments ='The triad of impairments' is what the autism spectrum disorders all share in common with each other, to be put on the same spectrum.
Theory of mind, or ToM = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_mind [no idea at explaining ToM,can only thinking of posting a wikipedia link, sorry]
Functioning levels,or Functioning =May hear of 'functioning' quite a bit on WP,it refers to an autists ability to function in the world-life skills, communication skills, intelligence, learning skills etc.
For the most part,it is used to pre judge and discriminate against autists in 'the real world',especially against those in care services or those who need care services.
it's mostly pointless term, but the autistic community uses a more indepth understanding of it.
Autism community =the 'autism community' is not what see on WP,it includes everyone who have some relation to autism-be it families, the specialists, the organisations and charities etc.
Autistic community =the 'autistic community' is made up of only those on the autistic spectrum,
from the profoundly affected to the borderliners.
cure ='cure' is very often spoken of on WP,but it doesn't mean much as there isn't one so far, will find a mix of beliefs here-some [like am] come under pro cure or pro choice, others see themselves as anti cure, some are extreme anti cure,a lot do respect what others want.
DLA ='DLA' is disability living allowance,a UK benefit that people on any part of the spectrum can get as long as they have enough support needs to get at least low rate,it's split into two parts, the care component and the mobility component.
SSDI ='SSDI' means Social Security Disability Insurance,it's one of the benefits given in America for those who meet the impairment criteria, and have worked enough for it.
SSI = 'SSI' means Social Security Insurance, another US benefit that people on the spectrum can get, this one is less than SSDI but those who havent worked can get it.
cant think of any others right now,but they're all common terms on here.
