i was txting this girl and she was telling me about how she's getting college credits while she's still in college and then she said "its the best thing since sliced bread". so I think it means that sliced bread was a major invention or a major turning event in history
Why sliced bread? why cant she say "since inventing the lightbulb" or something? wouldnt that be just as funny? was she trying to be sarcastic?
Any thoughts?

Bread used to come in unsliced loaves. They were hard to slice. Somebody came up with a bread slicing machine so people wouldn't get hurt slicing bread.

The best thing since sliced bread is a common phrase. It means she really likes it.

The REAL story is apparently that bread used to come unsliced. Slicing was difficult, since the humidity, timing, etc... had to be just right! If not, it could dry out, not be cleanly cut, etc... Also, packaging was difficult. Anyway, someone came up with a way to do it, quick, clean, automated, and apparently he had quite an ego. He would say that something was the best thing since sliced bread, and it caught on.

But WHAT is so special about getting college credits while you are in college? Isn't that a given, if you attend classes and get decent grades?

Has anyone actually tried slicing bread before? It's not fun.

It's about as much a pain in the butt as trying to spread cold butter onto a piece of bread. :x

Well, if you don't realize how hard it can be to cut right, how you have to do it quick, and problems with packaging, it DOES sound like a stupid statement. The bread slicer is FAR more complicated than a lightbulb. Heck, almost anything is. Bread can dry out QUICKLY, and even FASTER if it isn't refrigerated. And WHEN is the last time you saw bread refrigerated in the store?

I slice bread quite well and i can thank my grandfather for that. my grandfather was always really anal about his bread slices. if it was too crooked he'd make a comment, if it was too thin he'd say something. i learnt to cut the perfect piece from him so it's really not that bad for me. plus unsliced bread fresh out of the oven is amazing, sliced isn't as good.

It's one of many old sayings that sound strange nowadays. There are more of these sayings
than you can shake a stick at :)
