Have you ever been drawn towards white noise or any sound because it makes steady sound over and over that doesn't change? You can sort of "get lost" in the sound which eases your mind and enables you to concentrate and find solutions to problems.
Thank you for phrasing that so eloquently. Yes, I do this all the time. The unchanging, "drone" aspect of certain kinds of sounds is immensely calming and focusing for me, and I do use these sounds to help me get in the right frame of mind to solve problems or intently think about something. Music can do this too, but it has to be minimal in nature. Lyrics or excessive instrumentation takes away from the meditative effect.
I record my own instrumental music, and when I've played it to others, they always tell me:
"It's boring"
"It's hard to listen to"
"It's repetitive"
"It's putting me to sleep"
"The same thing over and over"
and so on...
The reason I make this kind of music is because it reassures me and helps me concentrate. It cuts out all distractions and puts my brain on one wavelength. Acoustic therapy. A predictable, mathematic vibration that deflects obsessive thoughts and brings me peace.
In nature, I find many sounds with a similar effect. One you mentioned, a babbling brook. Running water of any kind, really. Wind blowing through trees. Crickets. Birds. Natural repetitive sounds. I think human beings are meant to hear this stuff on a regular basis. It helps to keep our brains in check. Unfortunately, many of us are surrounded by the perpetual clatter of civilization.
Thank goodness for portable music players. I can drown it all out.
