Problem associated with reading books

My parents are always persuading me to read books more, because it would help me a lot at school. I have tried reading fiction books but I get easily bored and distracted. I have read non-fiction books related to my interests and enjoyed them, but I have been told that I look to much at mathematics, facts and figures and also foreign languages (It is supposed to help my English).

Anyone else had this problem?

nope, I have a interest in books so I have the opposite problem...

how about finding fiction books centered around a character who enjoys mathematics?

There's no way I can finish a book, I am constantly distracted, can't follow the plot, can't get interested. Seems to get better with comics, I guess the visual component is key.

Isn't this good practice for numeracy and foreign languages?
These interests could be developed into useful skills with practice.

Kind of bizarre that they're discouraging your interests given all the current educational legislation targeting improving standards in these two subjects.

Lots of people struggle and get bored with Maths and Foreign Languages.
I think it's good that you're taking an interest if you believe these subjects will help you. If I were you, I'd keep focussing hard on the Maths, it could pay off in the future!

What you focus on now does affect what happens in the future.

I read fiction, but I choose authors that entertain me. Find fiction that matches your interests. You may find the author has other stories you like that are outside your interests.

Go for whatever you can.

I used to be obsessed with reading. I would read constantly, whether in the car, in bed, at the dinner table, walking somewhere, etc. It must be said that I would read a few books over and over again, although I was still open to expanding my collection then.

That's changed. Now I can only really get into books that I've already read before. New books, if they're longer than a short story, tire me after the first few pages. I just can't maintain interest, even for authors that I know and have read before :(. In my mind I want to read more, but I just can't, which is pretty sad since I like writing too.

Guess I do have problems associated with reading books.

I don't understand your question. Do you have a problem reading books? If not then it's your brain so read what you want to. So where is the 'problem' you have with reading?

Why is disliking fiction a problem? I would rather read a math or physics book any day in the week. The only fiction I really like is science fiction and alternate history.

i got the same "problem" as thread-starter, i cant wrap my mind around fiction books. with few exceptions, fiction that seems to revolve around my mind-frame. so far only found like 3-4 books i read all way through tho

it is weird that they are trying to stop you from reading books about stuff you like.

i like reading books from authors that interest me, i have been reading a lot of manga lately.

Lately it seems every time I try to read a book, I get listless and just want to read comics instead @_@

I think it's about time to get a new Batman book, or maybe re-read one...I got so bored I ended up finishing my huge Superman book, and I don't like Superman very much

Maybe a book with pictures would help...

I guess I just have a low concentration span and hate paragraphs (I prefer lists!).

They aren't stopping me from reading stuff they like. I just think they want me too read things that help my with my weaknesses I guess

I don't know if your parents are being realistic. Everyone is better at/more interested in certain subjects than others. They probably think fiction is going to help your writing, but I really don't see why non-fiction books wouldn't.

A lot of people with aspergers probably do prefer non-fiction, but I wouldn't say that was exactly a problem.

If you do want to get into fiction, I'd say just keep trying different authors until you find one you enjoy. I can't stand a lot of things that other people rate highly, but manage to find some fiction i really enjoy.

I resisted reading quite a lot when I was younger and still resist reading fiction as an adult. Now, I'd rather read a technical manual, or current events or a computer book than read the latest best seller.

I had an excellent English teacher when I was in school which helped me breeze through my college English classes and I ended up getting an English minor. Go figure.

So, why read fiction? People do it for different reasons but one reason why some may suggest it is to learn a little more about social interactions or maybe to get your mind off of other things. But, that also can be done through watching TV, right?

And, for some reason, there are some people that "look down" upon others simply because they do not know what the current best seller is, or the latest hot new author is or whatever. It is kinda of funny for me to encounter someone like this and have a conversation about the latest new fiction book that I have no clue about but when I ask if they have read anything by Melville, T.S. Elliot or Faulkner (Hey Fella) I get a blank stare.

Anyway, good advice by other posters. Find something that interests you. If you like Math (I majored in Math BTW) look up "The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy" by Stephen Douglas along with the other 4 books in the trilogy.
