That's not what my doctor told me. When I told her that IBS runs in my family and that my father had died of colon cancer, she said that I better start managing it now before it turned into colitis. They are all caused by the same yeast and are treated by the same diets. I have been reading a lot of books on this the last year.
IBS is not related to colon cancer. IBS is not a disease; it is a syndrome.

For some with IBD, diet makes a big difference. For others, it makes very little difference (like me).
Is your doctor a gastroenterologist? If she is, she didn't explain that well to you at all. She might mean you have a good chance of having IBD. Certain things can cause IBD to "flare up" but it is not restricted to dietary concerns. In fact, it is believed to be more stress triggered than diet triggered.
If your doctor is not a GI, I would strongly suggest that you get yourself checked out by one. If IBD runs in your family, you are more pre-disposed to get it.
Sorry, I'm not trying to tell you what to do, and I know that this thread isn't meant to be about your personal health. But I feel that you should know that you can't "prevent" IBD; you can only manage the symptoms.
