today i walked into work, as i have done for the past 2 years, walked down the stairwell to the basement and opened the door to the hallway. and just stood there. for about 5 seconds i had no idea where i was, which way to turn, and what the signs on the wall i was staring at even said. i realised it was happening while it was happening because in my head i was like "wtf". then it just snapped and i realised i had to turn right. so what the heck was that? synapses misfiring? the start of a more progressive state of mental deterioration?

ever get that?

I sometimes forget where I am (though more often on what I am doing or why I just picked something up... which I usually don't remember until something jogs my memory), but it is only for a short moment and usually because I was walking while thinking about something else. Or at least that is what I blame it on. I've never had it for anymore than a second, the time it takes for the brain to completely shift gears. Perhaps that's what your brain was doing.

Yeah I refer to it as an "out of body" experience...it's happened to me before; usually it happens when someone gets really stressed out...which is quite normal for us.

I think I've had similar things happen. Not just about where I am, but like, what I'm doing and stuff. Like it just goes totally blank. Or if there are several options and I can picture all of them, I'll sometimes randomly pick the wrong one, even if it's something I do all the time, like your example. I think it actually gets worse if it's something I do often, because I stop thinking about it and it becomes automatic, and after a while it will just fall out of my long-term memory bank. XD;;;; I don't even know.
It's not too good for cooking, but it's not really so bad.
